Title: Hang in there Queenslanders
Post by: Ned on February 01, 2011, 02:29:38 PM
Hey you fellas - tough break with the summer weather and this latest cyclone looks to be about as bad ad it can get. . It will probably come our way when you've finished with it. Last weekend's mini-cyclone here was a pussy compared with this one, all over in 24 hours.
Hope you all come through it OK. Move the FJ to higher ground and batten down the hatches

Was tracking our cyclone, now the biggest in history as it crossed Willis island. Wind level suddenly dropped to calm so I thought it might have been the eye as the last reading was 192klm/hr.-No such luck, the weather bureau spinner simply over revved and blew up.. estimated speed now 292 klm/hr and will arrive on the coast with a king tide - yep a 5metre surge of water - a very real tsunami. watch it on the attached link.  Doug

TeeCee, Rendog....... keep your heads down guys......

TeeCee is in Airlie Beach and Rendog in Atherton areas...... both likely to cop it rather badly tonight.

Hi Harvy & all,

Got hit with "little" Cyclone Anthony 3 nights ago...........150kph(95MPH for the seppo's). The Whitsunday's lost power for 22hrs, No Milk, veggies or frozen foods left anywhere in town. As I type this Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi (Largest Cyclone in modern  Aussie history) is passing 300k's to the north on approach to landfall. Currently 64 knot winds outside schredding the trees with stronger bullets shuddering the house, plus there must be 200 firemen around the house hosing all the windows at the same time 'cause I've NEVER seen such heavy horizontal rain (they're forcasting 700mm rain in the next 6hrs).

Bikes are safely tucked away  :good2:

FYI, for those of you that may be bit confused as to terminology (I had to look it up to be sure):

Hurricane: a violent wind which has a circular movement, especially found in the West Atlantic Ocean. A hurricane is actually a violent storm formed with water which causes heavy rains and fierce winds and they can cause flooding of streets and homes.

Cyclone: a violent tropical storm or wind in which the air moves very fast in a circular direction. They can be formed over tropical waters, bar the Southeast Pacific and the South Atlantic Oceans. Technically, all hurricanes are cyclones but not all cyclones are hurricanes: if their wind speed is over 74 miles per hour, they're hurricanes, if not, they're just cyclones or tropical storms.

[Typhoon: a violent wind which has a circular movement, found in the West Pacific Ocean.]

Whatever the hell you call that monster, be safe folks.

Dan
