Title: Bag of Nuts
Post by: Klavdy on January 28, 2011, 06:43:39 PM
I'm after a bag of good quality stainless steel metric sized nuts, bolts and washers.
There's a bewildering array of suppliers online with prices ranging from suspiciously cheap to outrageously expensive.
Some of you blokes in the Trade (mechanics etc),do you have any recommended suppliers in the U.S.A?

I know some critical areas on bikes need specific grade non stainless Hi-Tensile type bolts, but lots of other ones that get all furred up can be replaced by stainless, plus they look good.
What grade would you look for?

Randy/ Klavdy-

When you guys start to dig into this I'd be interested, at least in the discussion, as well.  Interestingly, I most recently have been trolling for the same sort of thing.  Just a variety collection of SS Metric nuts and bolts.

I have been considering things like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ATD-800-Piece-M6-M16-METRIC-NUT-AND-BOLT-ASSORTMENT-/280470654557?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item414d5a8e5d (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ATD-800-Piece-M6-M16-METRIC-NUT-AND-BOLT-ASSORTMENT-/280470654557?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item414d5a8e5d)

Except in stainless.  -Maybe a bit smaller, And I have no need for the racks, but I'd like to have a decent sized assortment of commonly used metric motorcycle/ ATV nuts bolts and washers etc.  and have not seen what I was looking for yet.

Randy, do you have any energy around assembling such a kit?  Or do you know of anything already done?

Klavdy, do you have any more input on what sorts of nuts/ bolts/ washers you were thinking about?

Dan

Dan,
Not really mate,
I'm pretty much after a "Grab Bag" of all different sizes and heads and stuff, you know, button heads, phillip heads, I've seen a lot online , including THIS PLACE that has 560 piece sets (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/stainlessbolts/_i.html?_fsub=6899132) for £19.99

Ed, I found a present for you.

That's attractive, a good assortment.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/560pcs-STAINLESS-ALLEN-BOLT-KIT-SUZUKI-GSX-R-750-R-FX-/160528122833?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item256038c3d1 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/560pcs-STAINLESS-ALLEN-BOLT-KIT-SUZUKI-GSX-R-750-R-FX-/160528122833?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item256038c3d1)

Is for a GSXR, and cheap.

I wonder whether it's actually SS, and if there is a US equivalent?

Anyone, Randy?

there used to be a guy selling SS fastener kits for specific bikes on  ebay.

I purchased a set just to have the extra spares around.

K-man is probably getting ready for his stint on the roarty V-twin.

i would just loctite the bike from stem to stern and be done with it........  sometimes the parts that fall off can be hard to find

He's still there... seller's name is 'desmoparts'.

Still offers the kit for the FJ, too.

Edit: DO NOT order from these guys!!!  The package finally arrived - slit open on side and empty (but still containing the Invoice).  After a couple of e-mails they have refused to do anything about it and went silent.  I am currently disputing the charge via PayPal.  I will update with more info later.  But long story short: the small and VERY THIN padded envelope could NOT hold 560 pieces anyway...unless they were all tiny washers.  Insufficient packaging - and an attitude that it's not their problem.

-------------------------------------------------------

I ordered this 560 piece kit last Sunday for Klavdy's Tuono:
http://www.boltmeup.com/560pcs-stainless-allen-bolt-kit-aprilia-tuono-1000r-13269-p.asp (http://www.boltmeup.com/560pcs-stainless-allen-bolt-kit-aprilia-tuono-1000r-13269-p.asp)

Seemed like a killer price to me: less than $40.00 USD shipped to me in California (from the UK obviously).  They said it shipped last Monday.  I'll report back on the quality when I receive it.

I get most of my A2 and A4 stainless hardware from McMater-Carr. They have the best prices on good quality stuff. The A2 is the regular strength and the A4 is the stronger stuff.  I always try to order a full box to get the best price, but they will sell you 1 screw. Super nice hardware comes from Metric & Multistandard Components Corp. The MMCC stuff is mostly German, very expensive, and nice.

hmmm... never done it by the bag load... usually find out my sizes and lengths and then truck on down to nut and bolt suppliers...( doesnt help but the best ones i have found are on Industrial Drive in Newcastle).... 316 stainless is generally all i get, the thing i keep forgetting is that stainless into alloy will create oxidisation, so it is recommended to use a good antisieze... and then there is the theorm that using antiseize increase your torque values by up to 25%.... let us know how you get on Klavdy....i have a hefty supply of essential nuts and bolts at the moment..... always grab 3-4 more than i need when i visit the stores were i used to work..... What is it with all the stainless deal coming out of the UK?  Is it the sh!t weather that requires it or something?

Seriously I have seen a bunch or dirt cheap deal out of the UK, but nothing nearly equivalent here in the US.

Marsh....just found this on eBay.....not specific to the Tuono, but may just do the job, and it's a US company.

A BIG Plus one for Desmo Parts.

I have purchased a Stainless kit for five different bikes in the past from them with great results, don't worry about ebay just go direct @ http://www.desmoparts.com/ (http://www.desmoparts.com/)

P.S. You can also buy individual S/S bols to make up your own kit @ the above site.

Hope this helps

I also bought a s/s bolt kit for the FJ from Desmoparts. Good selection of bolts and an easy to follow list of what bolt goes where. Great people to deal with.  Highly recommended. :good2:  Regards, Pete.
