Title: gear selector seal
Post by: Kopfjaeger on January 25, 2011, 07:01:24 PM
G'day folks. Just a quick question. my external gear selector seal has decided to weep oil in happiness, looking at the manual it's showing that i have to remove the clutch to get the gear selector shaft out...( remove from the R/H side of the engine) just wondering if anyone has done it the way I have removed drive shaft seals etc in the past... as in remove the E clips and then just hook it out and (gently) place the new one in situ. Bit pushed for time, am going to order a new seal tomorrow (love public holidays in the middle of the week... but this time its frustraing)... seems like it wouldnt be a problem... but just thought I'd check anyway. thanks in advance.
cheers

G'day Neil

Bloody public holidays in the middle of the week are a pain eh!

To your question......... I believe it can be done as you said. IIRC, Klavdy did his a few years back......screwed a couple of self tappers into it diagonally opposite each other and pried it out, then carefully installed the new one.
I think Randy RPM has also posted on this subject a while back.

Happy Aus Day mate

Neil,

You have it already figured out. Just make sure you do not push the selector shaft in once you remove the e-clip as the detent might not be able to be realigned without a complete clutch disassembly.

Yes, very similar.  Fireworks and citizenship ceremonies and naming of honors recipients.  Actual point in time 'remembered' is the landing 223 yrs ago of English at Botony Bay.  There they declared the land "Terra Nullius" (empty land) and proceeded to bully the natives very similarly to what happened in North America.
Post Offices and gov't offices and banks are closed for the day, but most other businesses remain open.  Some use it an an excuse for a sale.

Fairly close Arnie, while the First Fleet did originally land in Botany Bay, they soon realised it sucked so went up the coast a bit into Port Jackson (which is today known as Sydney Harbour).
They hoist the Ensign in Sydney Cove (now pretty much Circular Quay/The Rocks) got on the grog and had an orgy. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-470887/The-founding-fathers-Australia-The-story-convicts-shipped-New-World.html)

When the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock, the first act of the passengers was a prayer meeting.
When the First Fleet landed at Port Jackson, their first act was an orgy.
It explains a lot about the ensuing characters of our two nations.

Nowadays, Australia Day (known colloquially as Bogan Day) is a chance to get drunk outta your mind, wrap yourself in cheap Chinese made Aussie flags and gew-gaws, wipe your feet on your Aussie flag beach towel, declare yourself a Patriot and that 'Straya is the bestest country in the World then settle into an afternoon of  bashing anyone who looks remotely Middle Eastern.

Some say this is no bad thing,,,

Others claim it tarnishes our reputation internationally as a peaceful, multi-cultural society,

The Honours part are reserved for the usual worthies, you know, chairmen of merchant banks and the large receivership companies, big political donors and their ilk.

Australia day is the day that recognises when the first fleet (a convoy of convicts) landed at Botany Bay (1788) which is just south of Port Jackson/Sydney Harbour. Indigenous Australians/Aboriginals  regard it as invasion day and I can understand and have some sympathy for their sentiments. I'm a fifth generation aussie with family links to the first fleet and for me, the real Australia Day is 1 January 1901 when we became independant from England.

Apart from various government and community ceremonies many of us celebrate with a bbq and a cupla beers with family and friends. Australia is a multi cultural community and despite the media beat ups over a few isolated ethnic tensions it is a safe and happy place to be and I wouldnt live any where else.

Yes, but how is it riding motorcycles?  I hear that the speed cameras and police make it nearly impossible to have a decent sportride on a bike...     (popcorn)

Hi there popcorn

Have been riding for around 30 years and travel around 30,000 km per annum, commuting, touring and the usual weekend stuff in the hills around Melbourne. Certainly in the last 5 years or so speed cameras and other police enforement activities have increased and you need to be very wary of them. Interestingly theres a great deal of government funded research going on into the reasons behind the increase in fatalities and hopefully this will translate into rider training and education rather than just straight out revenue raising enforcement. There are still a few places to ride for a fang on a sports bike around Melbourne where there is minimal police presence and its fairly easy to work out the predictable police enforcement pattern.  I tend to do track days when I really feel up for a decent fang am fairly lucky that the Philip Island Moto GP track is only an hour or so from home.

Actually it USED  to be good going for a fang round the dams in qld Marsh, im sure harvey will agree, up over Mt Glorious and round Mt Samson. But the locals got jack of 24/7 newbies wrapping their bikes round trees...( understandable) .... the council put loose gravel on the road to "resurface" the p[lace and evryone complained... its now full of the Latte crowd.... you know ... chicken strip riders.... i got tired of riding there , yes did go a bit quick but saw my fair share of people "sleeping" near their broken bikes so i then used to head down to Uki , round Moobar and on old tweed road.... im guessing im not making sense to you... if you ever come over ... Its just a nice ride... no need really to get your knee out....

Arnie, you live in Victoria now, yeah?

THE number of kilometres above the speed limit that Victorians can travel without getting booked is probably the lowest in the world.

A 3km/h tolerance level is set for mobile speed cameras in the state and a 2km/h tolerance level is allowed for fixed speed cameras.
VICTORIA'S 3.5 million driving licence holders paid an average of $113 a year in speeding fines in 2008-09, compared with $63 in South Australia, $60 in NSW, $30 in the Northern Territory, $25 in Western Australia and $15 a head in Queensland in the same year.

Figures for 2009-2010 are even worse.

Maybe you should put more energy into reforming your own country's political system.
Or do they need the extra revenue to pay for rusting helicopters?

Yes, I live in Victoria.  Yes, the speed cameras and the laws concerning them are outrageous.  I am doing what I can to change them, and have been successful in fighting one speeding ticket I received in my underpowered LPG van.  Unfortunately it took over a year and ended up costing me more than 4x the $$ just paying the fine would have.  The speed camera laws have an inverted onus of guilt.  You are guilty UNLESS you can prove otherwise.  Changing these laws will be very difficult due to the huge rewards the state gets from the fines and the blatant lies that Ken Lay (asst comm of police) tells.

Until these laws are changed if you want to travel at more than the posted limit, you have to choose a place that is unlikely to have either a speed camera or a cop.  Else, you just book a ride day at one of the many tracks.
