hey gang,
Changing the seals on my stock forks (1993) and I don't know how much oil each fork takes. HELP Please..
One quart should do both sides. 15 oz. per side. If you prefer to measure it 142mm +or- should get you to the right level.
I believe that is what the 91's call for so I am assuming yours would be the same.
Good job with the searching.

Search "fork oil" and it was the second result. Life is tough.
Well I searched it and found a few different answers. I don't think there is anything wrong with asking since this is the place for experience.

Lighten up a bit Andy! There is nothing wrong with asking questions - that is what we are here for! Even if the question has been answered here a million times previously - there is never anything wrong with asking IMHO.

Craig,
Please don't be put off asking questions, most of us are happy to help. Although you should get a manual (Haynes is ok) if you are doing any servicing or repairs. Seems like fork oil quantities vary depending on whom you ask. Haynes & my factory manual agree on 395mm (13.4 US fl oz) per leg with a level (no spring, fork fully compressed) of 169mm. Oil is 10w. If you wish to vary the amount of damping I would stick to the quoted quantity and vary the viscosity of the oil (I use 15w)

I think the later FJ's call for a little more fork oil. Stuart may have posted for the early years.
Don't mind Andy he hadn't finished his morning coffee, and he did find and post a thread that was relevant despite his withdrawals.
If we can put up with 12 GSXR wheel swap threads I think we can handle one more fork oil thread.

Could be. Haynes and the factory manual give one capacity for all '89+ models but looking at the info from the FJOC they give 446ml & 142mm level for '91+ models.

+1
We all started out somewhere and at some point we all asked questions. Negative post's help no one.

According to the Yahoo files section "FJ Quick Reference Data" the 1984-1990 will refill at 424ml or 14.33 oz and the 1991-1994 takes 446ml or 15.08 oz
Regardless of the source, measure the level with the springs removed and the forks fully collapsed. That level should be between 120 to 140 mm from the top of the tube. Use the smaller number if you want slightly stiffer fork action.
Make sure the level is the same in both forks. Then extend the forks, add the springs, and remeasure the level. Write this number down! That way you can easily change the fork oil in the future and not have to tear the front end down and remove the springs to measure with collapsed forks. You can block up the fornt end and measure directly.

+1 this way makes oil level changes super easy to adjust for those interested in fine tuning their suspension.
KOokaloo!
