Title: who is dirt biking at the spring rally?
Post by: mst3kguy on April 10, 2009, 08:14:56 PM
just checking to see who's dirt biking.  holeshot bill is letting me borrow his "how soon before dean breaks a collarbone?" 250.

At the rate things are going, I may be damned lucky to have a street bike by rally time.

The XT is still a question mark, too.               :dash1:

Won't be doing it unless it's basically forest-service roads, which will be boring for real DS bikes. I'm riding the 'Strom down, 'cause the trip's come to be a *huge* part of the adventure...I don't care to trailer two bikes and two sets of gear. The weather (and other factors) up here has prevented any sort of riding, at least for me, and I'm rusty as hell. I'm taking it easy, and a dual-sport ride on an unfamiliar bike seems like a good way to end up hospitalized. (Buff Brian's KTM300eXC...as yet, still unridden by me)

That being said, it kinda sucks. It may be slower-than-normal Rally for Rossi. Depends on how much comfort I can develop on the three-day trip down, plus whatever I can get in around here before then.

I screwed up the hotel reservations...the Red Roof Inn called me the other day at 11:30 PM to see where the hell I was. I booked on-line for April instead of May.

Duh.

Is Buff Bill loaning you the YZ? Nice ride...fun bike.

Well, hell, Nobbie did great on Carey's son's Honda CR at the summer rally.  How bad could Dean be a dirt bike?  :sarcastic:

Dunno.  I can't get past the mental image of that yellow 'Stitch flying through the woods...      :pardon:

I'm in the same boat.. my Spring rally is going to be short as it is and I don't want to give up more of it driving/pulling a trailer.   I asked Calvin if he had space in his trailer for the XR.  If he does I'll send it that way and maybe we can ride trails Saturday when the cops are handing out tickets at Shady Valley..

I'm still big on the idea of a dedicated dirt bike rally.  Hatfiled McCoy (WVa) is pretty centrally located and plenty of cabin rentals, bonfire friendly and you can ride motocross, dual sports, quads, whatever you got...

Nothing particular in mind.  Bad week in the garage here.

I might have something running by July...     :unknown:

What did you do?

I am at loose ends these days if you need a little help getting the bike ready to go.

Well, thanks to my buddy and fellow lister Paul Dodge, things may be looking up, but it's been kind of frustrating.      :dash1:

I had the XT running after a new top end, and woke up one morning to the smell of gas.  Went out to the attached garage to find gas dribbling from the tank.  Seems the DPO had glazed over a couple of leaks with Bondo.  So, I've been looking for a tank for that.

I sent the FJ down to a friends' shop for the sonic carb clean and some jet work.  After he put it back together, and put in some fresh gas, the bike sat there for a couple of days, awaiting a warm enough day for a test ride.  It decided to start pissing gas all over the shop floor, from multiple pinholes around where the fuel filter bracket is brazed to the bottom of the tank.  I had tried to replace that ugly tank last fall with a nice looking one I had picked up sometime back.  Everything was great then, except that it had (you guessed it) a small hole that hadn't been seen.    :scratch_one-s_head:

Paul was kind enough to take the FJ tank over to his shop and Saturday I watched while he puddled the brazed joint at the filter bracket, and added just a small bit of filler rod.  It still leaked under pressure.  Repeated several more times, with the same result in different places each time.  Later he gave it yet another shot with silver, and reports it is now holding, and has the XT tank done as well.  What a guy!    :good:

I'm in hopes that both repairs will hold up long enough that I can get one of my other FJ tanks worked over by Empire GP, and budget in a plastic tank for the XT355.  The new Penske for the FJ and top end for XT500 will just have to wait (again).

And I'm still trying to convince Paul to get himself down for an FJ rally...

We'll talk it out in Boone, see who we can get on board..  the downside to July is the heat.  Have to carry a two gallon camelbak.

the trick is to outrun the bugs..  That or just don't be the slowest member of your group: aka sacrificial gnat bait.

XR400 and the VFR will be coming to Boone with me.  Just went to Brown Mountain 2 weeks ago on opening weekend and had a blast. Been on the XR so much this year I have already killed a rear tire.  :good:

Looks like time is just too short to have the XT350 ready for Boone, though it was going to be pretty close.     :dash1:

It should be done by the end of May.

I should have two dual-sport bikes to choose from by ECFR time, though.    :yahoo:
