Good tuneup so it runs the way it's supposed to, then some track time to learn how to use it.

Help us out. Please define what you mean by:
1) "performance"
and
2) "massive cost"

What are you trying to do?

I'm going to move this topic over to the mods section.    Cheers! Pat

Also sorta depends on where you want the performance.  Braking?  Top speed?  Quickness?  Low rev power?  Long distanec comfort?  Cornering?

For someone asking for help, your tone is getting a little pissy.  You're just an anonymous user ID to most everyone on here.  We don't know squat about you or your abilities.

Then you ask what is essentially an open ended rookie question and get fairly basic and simple answers because the nature of your question kind of indicates that you may not know that much.

So, I have to ask.  If you've got all this FJ experience, why don't you already know the answer?  Or at least know that the answer is "It depends on what you want."

K&Ns are crap, go with UNI.....  K&Ns pass a LOT of fine silt, good way to open up the bore without taking the engine apart.

Fix up the crap suspension and take it to the Nurberg Ring, you won't need anything better!!
And remember don't let the bike take you some where that your brain hasn't arrived at least two seconds earlier

Being new here myself, I am a little taken back by the general attitude of some of the members. They seem to come across a little to arrogant for my likes, we'll see how this goes.

The best performance tip I'm going to give you is this - perform a complete and full tune up on the motorcycle, as someone did so kindly mention.

Start with a compression test on a warm engine, if you've got a good engine, we'll move ahead.

Do a "dry" and a "wet" compression test. By "wet" I mean squirt a small amount of oil into each cylinder after your initial test and review the results - if you have a dramatic increase "wet" you may have some issues with the rings. If the compression is low, and there is no change "wet", it's possibly you have an issue with the valves.

Next, move on to a full tune - including a valve adjustment. These are some of the easiest motorcycles to work on, they are a true pleasure. Buy an oil filter, motorcycle specific oil, spark plugs, a valve cover gasket and buddy up with your local shop. Many times, if you are not a jerk, the local shop will loan you their valve adjustment tool or rent it to you (you may have to put down a refundable deposit), and they will swap shims with you for free or for a nominal amount. You'll also want to synch the carbs, that also requires a special tool.

If the bike sat for a long period of time, the carbs may need to be cleaned - most common way to tell if there may be a carb problem is if the bike takes a really long time to warm up and never accepts throttle without falling on its face - a huge hestiation when the throttle is opened is a sign of a plugged pilot/slow jet circuit.

Moving on -

For day to day riding, leave it all stock - including the intake air filter. You'll have ton's of power where you will really use it 95% of the time.

If you want to bump the power up, remember, it is a trade off - you will basically be moving it around. You'll see a large increase with a exhaust mod (slip on cans or a full system) and individual air cleaners/jetted carbs.

Another thing to consider is the longevity of the engine - most mods will reduce the life of the beast. And there is also the chance of lowering the resale potential - buyers generally pay more for a stock motorcycle.

There is my two cents, take it for what it is worth.

I hope that helps you out a bit, best of luck to you.

I just read all 4 of your posts and the responses to them.  I see no evidence of 'arrogance'.  If you are reading other posts then surely you must realize that there are established, in some cases sarcastic even, relationships between other members.

Anyway, I think this is a great group of warm, knowledgeable, generous folks, from where I sit.

That's alright mate, you're probably still drunk from Xmas day.
You should be fine by Tuesday.

I am, on general principles, a most tolerant and enlightened person and this forum is pretty much like a virtual pub,we talk shit, talk about technical issues, laugh, argue and carry on like we'd do in a pub or around a camp-fire.
There's nothing most of us write on these pages that we wouldn't say face to face and we do say these things face to face when we get a chance to meet up.

Aptly put, motohorseman! I'd guess some of the very knowledgable folks on here are growing weary of putting a lot of effort into trying to help out the newbies and getting not much in return. Thus the occasional snippy responses to awkward posts. I know I owe some members thank yous (and cash!) as I have received far more than I have been able to give from great members on this forum.

Dan makes a good point though, there are many old friends and rally attendees that like to trade friendly barbs, which can be offputting to new folks.

Your spelling and punctuation are excellent, you express your point coherently, your replies seem well reasoned, and you strive to be helpful. This should protect you from most of the malevolent spirits here, and stir up the simple ones.
