Title: Just brought home an '84 FJ1100 with some engine problems
Post by: TheRadBaron on November 21, 2010, 06:59:24 PM
Hey guys, I signed up a few weeks ago when I was considering buying this '84 FJ1000 from a good friend of mine.  After many beers were drank, pipes (tobacco) were smoked, and motorcycle conversations were had, a deal was struck and I brought it home.  I'm a big enthusiast of early '70s-era Japanese bikes.  I own many and I ride the wheels off them.  I do all the work on my bikes myself.  The newest and most powerful bike that I've ever ridden is my '78 XS650.  This year however, something happened in my head and I had a big expanding of motorcycling consciousness.  Suddenly I want more...so I got the FJ.  Its a huge leap forward for me and I'm very excited about getting it on the road and really zooming.

I have the lower fairing, but it's not on the bike at the moment.
I don't know a lot about its history, but it has 51,000 miles on the clock and was described as running great until a few weeks ago when it started running not-so-great.  I'm going to start a thread in the "running problems" forum to detail its engine troubles.
The good:
-Brand new Bridgestone Battlax tires
-New Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust
-Tarrozi rearsets
-Corbin seat
-Everything works perfectly except for the motor

The Bad:
-Engine trouble
-Has been laid down on its left side and sustained some slight damage

I'm glad that there's a good forum for these bikes (and one that likes guns, to boot!).

Welcome along for the ride.  That bike looks pretty good from this side.
I'm sure we (collectively) can help you resolve your engine problems.
Check out the files section and then ask away - someone will have an answer for you.

Cheers,
Arnie

Thanks.  I live in central Illinois, near Champaign.  Sorry, I'll go update my profile to reflect that.
The picture is of the good side of the bike.  The other side isn't too bad, but it's kind of scraped up.

Oh, that IS good news.
You would be right on my way to an East Coast Rally next summer.
Get that sucker runing sweet and we'll hit the road together!

Hi there guys

My name is Vernon and I reside in Port Elizabeth in South Africa. I am the proud owner of a 1984 Yamaha FJ 1100. Had an accident two months ago, broke two ribs bu am back on top again. had the FJ resprayed and its really looking lovely and goes like a rocket. Clutch seems to stay very low though, Can it be set up? I'm not mechanically inclined so any help would sincerely be appreciated. Till I hear from you guys, take care and happy biking!!!!

Regards to you all

Welcome Vernon.

We have a couple of your countrymen here and I'm sure they will give a shout eventually.

Re the clutch...... maybe you have a leak at the slave.... quite a common problem on the FJ. Have a look at the paint on the outside of the oil filter - if it is flaking or paint is missing, is a sure sign of leakage.

A re-build kit is the cure.
