Title: Head pipe color?
Post by: turbocamino on November 05, 2010, 04:07:02 PM
Several posts led me to believe that running on the lean side would be favorable for these motors (89,1200 stocker) I run a 4/1 exh. an ign.advance, uni pod filters and a dynajet kit.  I opted to use the 114 mains with their needles and springs, with the needles at #2 and one shim.Everything brand new. This is my 5th FJ and i felt like i nailed the jetting this time as the bike ran outstanding, best i ever felt,....started perfect...great idle..no flat spots or hesitations...pulls hard...seamless acceleration ...300 miles per tank..life is good! So..last weekend i pulled the exh.off, which is brand new, and after 2000 miles, looking down the head pipes ,still looks brand new....not a hint of black soot...not ash white either...I have NEVER seen this before. Did i nail the jetting or does this sound lean?  I think the plugs look almost new as well. thanks.

300 miles per tank?  That works out to 60 mpg using 5 gallons of fuel.  Something seems a bit odd.  I've got a similar setup as you and I am sweating if I see 180 miles on the odometer and haven't found fuel yet.  Fuel light is glowing bright red by that point.

My Ninja 250 gets between 60-65mpg on the highway and it's completely stock.

Lean is mean, but not long lasting.

you would know if it was off... it would be stumbling in the midrange and falling on its face on top.

sounds to me like you nailed it  :good2:

I get a steady 43-44 mpg on my bone-stock 92 with the mixture screws turned 2-3/4 turns out. 200 miles on a tank is an easy feat for me.
