Obviously the EBC is cheaper. Are stiffer springs required with the kevlar disks?
I admit I ride rather aggressively. My current Ferodo disks only lasted about 8 months. :scratch_one-s_head:
Your thoughts?
I run OEM drive and driven (friction and steel) in all of my bikes street and race. I do run EBC heavy duty springs but have not been happy with EBC or Barnett fiber plates.
The only exception to this is an 09 GSXR600 that I crew for in expert level racing (WERA) . We run OEM drive plates and Barnett cryo treated aluminum driven plates to reduce mass and minimize power loss. Worked well enough for Rob to win the NC region A superstock (ASS) championship and we never touched the clutch all season. A SS is a 1,000cc class running lightly modified production bikes, Rob won riding his 600 and often holeshot the races.
Go with 2 stock springs or two stock FJR clutch springs as they are less expensive than the stock fj springs are. I don't know anyone who is using two clutch springs that's having any probelm with enough clutch grip. If your pressure plates are worn out in months your clutch spring is very weak. I would also go back with the stock disks the Barnetts are not highly recommended around here.

Double stock FJR springs and OEM plates, one more time.... still have the stock frictions, had to replace 2 steels when I added the 2nd spring.
OEM, all other clutch discs are garbage.
Put enough spring against them that they don't slip, and get on with it.
LOTS of good info, thank you. I'm looking on Ebay right now. You can imagine the coordination of purchasing parts and delivering them to family in the U.S. to bring with them when they visit us in Hungary.
Is this the clutch spring you are talking about?

Another thing I forgot to mention, as the bike gets hot, the clutch doesn't slip - or very rarely. Does that factor into any of this?
BTW - When the clutch doesn't slip and I crank open the throttle, I'm sure the day gets a little longer because my old FJ is rotating the earth. The fresh carb sync made a big difference. It has VERY smooth accelleration now!
Nope....that's a plate...

Yup, I feel stupid. I didn't look close enough.
What about just ordering the FJR spring and doubling it with my current one? I also don't want to buy a clutch set "just because." I'm getting tired of throwing money at this old bike. The problem is that if it IS my clutch disks, then I'll have to wait until next February until I can get any more parts. Decisions, decisions...
Anyone have a Yamaha part number for an FJR clutch spring?

Your picture is a plate not a spring
Here is one on ebay with some used parts.

How about you send me an email and I will send the parts to you in Hungary. I have the clutch springs, O.E. frictions, steel floating discs, and all of the other parts you will need to get it fix properly. Not only can I save you time, but money as well over eBay and most dealers.
Here is a comprehensive write up in regards to your clutch: http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=1808.0 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=1808.0)

Plus, I could include the valve cover grommets you need as well in the same box...

Randy can hook you up with all the parts you need and at great prices. Look at it this way, no matter what you put into the FJ its a hell of a lot less than the cost of new bike.

Read that, twice. Should answer every question you ever had and ever will have on an FJ clutch (until you get to sliders and lockups and insane stuff, at least).
Take your clutch pack out and MEASURE it. EXAMINE IT. You'll need the gasket (order it in advance, it WILL tear if you don't have one!). The springs can get weak over the years, and they're a borderline design in the first place IMO. Throwing an FJR spring in to replace the current spring may be enough, doubling the stocker with the FJR spring will also work. If you intend on doubling springs, the EBC might work for you (not a huge savings though), but with luck an FJR bit could go in alone and provide you all the grip you need. What's done to the bike? Making more power significantly? If you've got good boltons, you may want to go ahead and just plan on doubling things.
Randy's king for parts, though shipping could be high, ask him and find out!
Well, the problem with shipping things here to my house in Hungary is that everything stops at customs in Budapest. They open EVERYTHING and send *most* of it on about a month later. It's horrible. I have bank statements, PIN number mailings, and other flat mail OPENED prior to it coming to my house.
I do have a friend coming in November. Randy - you have mail.
Thanks, Randy for working with me.
I felt confident buying the stuff from you because of all the positive comments and feedback from other members here. :good2:
Well, I finally got around to adding the clutch spring plate to my bike. I just bolted it on top of the old one. It's very stiff to pull now! I'm not sure how it is to drive yet as it's still kind of wet and cold. I'll probably be driving it more to work next week - especially since the starter went out in the car. :sorry:

Yeppers, I hope you don't have heavy stop/go traffic in Hungary. You saw this in the File section so you should have been forewarned.

A drawback to this double spring mod is the heavier pull at the clutch lever. It's a fact. The Yamaha FJ oem clutch master cylinder/lever assembly (m/c) uses a 5/8" diameter piston. Solution: Replacing this with a 14mm master cylinder/lever assembly off a Yamaha FJR which will soften the pull at the clutch lever. ( but wait, there's more: you get a neat adjustable lever to boot)
Even with the 14mm FJR m/c, the lever pull is still a bit stiffer than oem, but not too bad.
I do know this: A Double oem spring with the OEM FJ 5/8" clutch m/c sucks in stop and go LA traffic.
I doubled up my spring and it feels fine.Clutch works a lot better too.I see no need to change the master cylinder.
I'm seriously considering changing mine, because mine is leaking anyway (out the cylinder). I found one on Ebay, but I would like to change my levers also. Besides, the master cylinder on Ebay has no lever.
Are FJR and FJ1200 levers interchangeable? I guess the question would be, would an FJR brake lever fit on my FJ1200?

no , the levers are different for fjr and fj.
fjr levers are adjustable and look just fine on the fj after you change the masters.
Well, I decided that I don't want to spend a lot of money, so I just ordered a clutch master cylinder rebuild kit and a pair of levers. The black on my clutch lever has been eaten off by the leaking plunger. I have big hands, so it's not a huge problem.
Thank you all for the help! :good2:
