Title: Where do you get your shims?
Post by: wakdady on October 19, 2010, 11:04:52 PM
Do you buy OEM or something else. Such as these; http://www.procycle.us/hotcams/valve_shims.htm (http://www.procycle.us/hotcams/valve_shims.htm)
Someone on ebay is selling a kit of oem ones for a LOT; http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-FJ-1200-XJR-1250-valve-adjustment-kit-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem45f6073712QQitemZ300480411410QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-FJ-1200-XJR-1250-valve-adjustment-kit-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem45f6073712QQitemZ300480411410QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories)

Usually, the FJ needs few changes of shims.  Frequently you can move shims between valves to get the lash correct.  You may still need one or two shims and *most* dealers will either swap with you for your "not needed" shims or swap with a minimal charge.  These shims are only $10.12 each retail
Be aware that some Hondas also used 25mm shims and some Toyota cars also use 25mm shims.
Make sure you measure the shim obtained from the dealer as sometimes the shim is not the thickness marked.

Cheers,
