Title: Please get rid of smilise or make them an option.
Post by: MyFirstNameIsPaul on March 28, 2009, 09:38:49 AM
The smilies options on the topic reply and start new topic pages cause my poor little P4-M 2.6 GHz laptop that I use to run at 60-80% and it adds a lag to my typing.

1.  Fix your computer.

2. Get a better connection.

My internet connection is fine, it's only when every single one is showing on the entry page.  It's possible the CPU in the netbook has some instruction set to deal with these, but for me it's really irritating.

You can switch to Opera web browser and set your "FJforum" tab to "Cached Images ". This forces them to be pulled from memory (instantly), and not downloaded in everytime. Other browsers may have a similar setting.

Okay - maybe I'm not clear here:

I HAVE NO PROBLEMS DOWNLOADING THE IMAGES.

Follow?

I'll say again, slightly differently:

DOWNLOADING THE IMAGES IS NO PROBLEM FOR MY COMPUTER.

My internet connection is 20Mbps down / 2 mbps up.

The problem is that every image is like a tiny applet or something, so having 30 or so on the screen at once makes my CPU run very high.

I am active daily on 5 different forums and none of them have this problem.  The other forums are way busier than this one is.  Kawiforums.com just shows 4 of the animated characters and include a 'more' option if those don't do you.

I'm not buying a new computer for a forum.  Any site that is too much for a P4-M 2.6 GHz is poorly designed.  I can go to yahoo.com and any other very popular site and have no issues at all.

I understand now. OK, Opera also allows you to "disable animated images". The smilies are there, just stopped. That takes my CPU usage from 30% to 3%.

Paul,

Understand that I just recently added in the emoticons due to user request.  I added in animated gif emoticons.  In the updated version of this forum (hopefully out within a month) I will see if there is some way I can make them optional per specific user.

Now, that said, I think you have other issues with your computer.  As my "Jacuzzi" computer (where I am now - meaning, if it drops in the spa...I don't give a shit cuz it is so damn old), I am using an OLD DELL laptop with a Pentium III 800Mhz processor and only a paltry 376 Mb of RAM.  The site runs GREAT!  The emoticons take...oh...maybe a second and a half to fill up the section above where I'm posting now...    With Microsoft Outlook and 2 browser windows open at this time...my CPU load is 20%.   Hence, I think you have other issues.

In summary: The site is not poorly designed.  Your computer specs sound great...and the fact that it works great on this old piece of shit laptop of mine leads me to my conclusion.  How many processes do you have running in the background?  The minuscule amount of CPU resources that are required by the "animated gif" emoticons may be the straw that is breaking the camel's back...

Hate to say it but your computer is set up really poorly if it can't handle smilies and has those specs.  See Marsh's comments above.  P4 2.6g?  That's perhaps double the performance of the computer that I generally use.. but mine's set up correctly and blows through anything but large applets pretty well (read, java or flash games or the like).

Sounds like your laptop needs either blown clean (possibly) or needs all the goofy crap turned off (almost always the problem with non-power users).  The smilies are .gif files, and not big ones, there's nothing there to demolish your performance.

What you could consider is blocking the http://fjowners.com/smilies/ (http://fjowners.com/smilies/) portion of the address, easy enough.

I'm not  a newcomer .  i is poorly designed.  I am very popular.
