Title: Not an FJ........what is it?
Post by: Harvy on October 13, 2010, 06:42:43 PM
Can anyone identify this bike?

The current owner says its a v-twin....... but I'm thinking it may be a VF700 Interceptor     :unknown:

Right on the money, it appears to be a vf700. Maybe he's confused since it's a V-4?

Looks like it could be an '84 (in the states anyways)

Yep, that's what it looks like... not sure if the wheels are stock, though.  I don't remember seeing any like that on a VF here in the States.  They look similar to the ones on the CX500 turbo, but IIRC, it was shaft drive

I sold my VF700 to buy my FJ.

Depends on what the top end sounds like, I think.  IIRC, some of them had problems.

16" front wheel, so you have that same tire limitations as early FJ's, but the one I had was a sweet ride, with FJ like ergos.

But I wanted an FJ, and couldn't keep both.

Nancy's SO has more Honda V-Four experience than I do... he currently has 2 or 3 of them.

Yep, thanks Randy...... now that I know what it is I have been doing a bit of reading.......sounds to me like they were a bit weak in the oil supply to the top end, and many went back to the dealers for a mod to fix the problem.

I would like to get a V4 but this may not be such a good choice.

Thanks for the replies all.

Harvy-

You want a V4?  Splurge man, go and buy yourself a shiny new Aprillia RSV4 (and let me ride it).  :)

If'n I were looking for a Honda V4 to play with on the cheap, it would be one of the VFR gear drive models.

Wheels are correct, at least for an '85 (which is all I could find a relevant shot of).

The V4s, at least the larger ones, had top-end lubrication problems that resulted in pitted camshaft lobes. Dunno if that applied to smaller-displacement engines or not. Apparently, the carbs are a bitch to remove as well.

It appears that the seller has the VIN wrong. According to everything I could find, it should be a 17-digit number with the first digit indicating the country of origin. The number given starts with what would appear to be a model code (RC16). That code would indicate a CX650 Turbo...which this bike definitely ain't

Speaking of cheap V4's, I saw this the other day.  It's likely sold or a scam, bit it peaked an interest in me that my 'I have too many bikes already' self crushed....

'I have too many bikes already'

Feh...ain't no such thing as "too many bikes". There's just "not enough room" and "not enough time". Gettin' divorced went a long way toward clearing up the "space" issue...being unemployed covered the lack-of-time-thing.  :negative:

Yes Rossi....... I found the same thing with regard to the VIN, which is what initially had me confused........all I could find was CX500 for RC16, and I knew it wasn't one of them. I rang him and he said it was a V-twin....which confused me even more.
I eventually figured it must be a VF700F, as that was the only Honda I could find with those wheels and that fuel selector on the left side of the tank.
