Title: 2003 R1 front brake master cylinder.
Post by: Harvy on October 06, 2010, 11:22:16 PM
I'm a clutz (or is that klutz?).    :dash1:

Recently bought the above, which came with OEM hoses and gold spots (gold spots sold).
In trying to undo the banjo bolt I snapped the plastic elbow from the top of the master to the remote reservoir.  :hang1:

So I took a look at the parts diag and guess what....... Yamaha do not sell that part as a separate item...... you have to purchase the whole bloody master cylinder to get it...... here in AUS$245 from the stealers........ bugger me I bought the whole assembly, including the callipers and a rear wheel calliper, hanger and axle for just on AUS$100.

A bit of lateral thinking later, I went to the local Suzuki dealer. The GSXR1000 of '04 vintage looks identical and guess what....... the elbow is listed as a separate item and sells wholesale for around $5.

Got it yesterday and it is IDENTICAL.    :good2: :good2: :good2:

SO if anyone is as ham fisted as me and does the same thing, that's the answer!

Also, can anyone tell me the bore size of a YZF750 ('98) clutch master cylinder.
I want to get rid of both the front brake and clutch masters with their 'coffin box' reservoirs and have remote reservoirs both sides with their adjustable levers.

Cheers

i have got a zx7 clutch master cyl for mine, which matches my r1 brake one and again does away with the chunky blocks of the originals.

when i say got i really mean i have got it but it is still in the box! (and has been for a few months now!), i got it because i had ridden another fj with one fitted and it was very nice, worked very well and looked a lot better plus there is a lot better choice of levers to fit, i have a 1999 r1 brake master cyl (fitted) and the zx7 one will be on soon as at the moment my clutch slave cyl only has 1 1/2 good bolts holding it on, one is good, one is iffy, and one has properly gone, so not changing m/cyl till i have re tapped the knackered threads, hope to do this soon then will take some pics!

I finally mounted the R1 master...... I like it.... and it has resolved the not so good front brake lever pressure requirement I posted about after the FZ1 front end swap.

The front brakes are now perfect!    :yahoo: :good2:

I also have a YZF 750 clutch master on the way, so I will post up some pics when I get it all finished.

The only thing I encountered in setting up the brake master was that the banjo bolt thread depth (I am using the double banjo from the old splitter) is shorter than the OEM master so it will not torque up tight.........easy solution is to put a couple of extra copper washers between the body and the innermost brake line.
