i bought my 87 fj1200 6 months ago. was told it had low compression...i checked it doesn't. i cleaned carbs and fuel got it running, but i have a "knock" sounds like its bottom end. any suggestions? thanks
when do you hear the noise ? idle ? accelerating? on the overrun ?
need more details please.....
KOokaloo!
sorry, i hear it at idle. i can't tell if it does it on acceleration due to exhaust. but i don't think it does

What is the idle speed set at? It should be around 1200 rpms, below that the FJ motor makes a bit of noise...
Eric M
idle is set about 1100 rpm. it seems to run good its just that noise its making. not backfiring and throttle is responsive.

Stickboy, As the FJ is an air cooled motor (no water jacket to muffle the noise) it tends to be quite noisy at idle and lead you to believe that catastrophic failure is just around the corner.
Just saying .......
Harvy
thanks, i had a katana and also have an 84 gpz and didn't know if i have a problem or not. this is my first yamaha.
pull the clutch lever in, the cluthes are very noisy
Bob

How many miles on the FJ mate?
Starter chain maybe?
Harvy
50 thousand. is there an easy way to check the starter chain?
Pull it apart, check everything and rebuild it!
Only way to know for sure.

Dont know if it will help, When I joined..I was a nervous minion... it RATTLES I cried...( I swear I heard snickers) but these fella's are right . It IS a noisy bike, I got new cam chain guides and cam chain put in.... not cheap... but ....my primary chain rattles ....its in the middle of the engine and yes its a split the cases job no way round...buzzing plastics..( fixed them)... and now I have a cricket loose in my cam's.... o and my rings and or valve stem guides are on the way out so its smoky off revs(but just a little bit)... all this being said I still ride it every day the only time it was off the road was an oil leak (DONT ask) I'm assuming you've done the stethoscope test? listened to the engine and tried to isolate where the knock is coming from? my only experience with bottom end was the GPz750r..... thump thump thump thump thump BANG BANG stop..... So i hope yours doesnt do that.Mine has 143 thousand kilodickets on it and still pulls .... well ok new rings and it d go better....chuckles....Just diagnose and isolate and these fellas will be able to help you... I know i drove 'em all nuts.... and probably still will....what sort of katana? 1100? 750 pop up or earlier.... I'm curoius about them i also have a GSX 750 ES.... but Shhhhhhhh this is yamaahahahahahahahah land......
G'Day mate.
What exhaust headers do you have?
Original ones?
Aftermarket ones?
Double walled original ones?
They are a noisy bike, hmmm, can you post a video of it(one with a sound track), or maybe someone on the list is close by,can listen to it with you.

I immediately thought of this, until I saw that he had a '87 1200, so even if he still has the oem, he will have single wall tubes...
Yea, at idle, they are noisy bikes, but they sure sing sweetly in the K zone.
Does it go quieter when you pull the clutch in??
Have you tried to balance the carbs?
If they are out of balance you will get a knock that will reduce with the clutch pulled in.
