Okay here it goes... yes another question about oil. :dash2: I know from reading previous experience on here that most use either Rotella or Amsoil. I was just curious if anyone has had any good experience with redline oil? I need to change the oil in a bad way and this is my main mode of transportation at the moment so need something that works extremely well out here in the Arizona desert. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
You know the drill. I sell Amsoil, I say it's the best. Others say to buy the cheap (insert brand) at Walmart/Kmart/Costco etc. If you want to read why you should use Amsoil, go to <http://www.amsoil.com/products/streetbikes/WhitePaper.aspx (http://www.amsoil.com/products/streetbikes/WhitePaper.aspx)>.
If you go Amsoil , I recommend getting the spin-on filter adapter from Randy and use the Amsoil EAO20 filter. <http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eao.aspx (http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eao.aspx)>
Best stuff, period.
If you want to get Amsoil for the lowest possible price, drop me a PM and I'll do my best.
Personally, I use the Rotella Synthetic. I'm in the South Texas heat and it's held up great for me. Whatever you use, I would suggest synthetic. IMO the standard oil just won't hold up to the heat and stress unless you plan changing it a lot more frequently than normal.

Personally, I use the Rotella Synthetic.
Me too. I notice a difference in how all 4 of my bikes shift with different oils. They seem to shift best with Rotella and I've tried several, including Amsoil, which seemed good but pricey, and Castrol which was the single worst oil I have ever used. Shifting the Gixxer with Castrol was really bad. I rode home from my test ride and drained it, it was that bad.

That's exactly how I ended up staying with the Rotella also. I tried a couple of different oils, to include Castrol, and the Motorcycle Mobile 1 and it did not shift nearly as smooth as the Rotella. Can't say I've ever tried the Amsoil though.
I've been looking for an oil to switch to as well.
Can't say I've heard of Rotella in Oz, which doesn't mean it isn't here. Does Rotella come in more than viscosity range?
I ride all year round and like the idea I can run a different weight oil from summer to winter.
I've almost decided to go to Amsoil, surely they just wouldn't be allowed to make such claims about performance at temperature if it weren't true. (Not to say others don't have that capability either).
Would probably use Yamlube synthetic if it didn't have such a STUPID name :dash2: Yamafriggenlube, who's the dumb ass who thought of that name?
What Rottela oil do you use ?
I found a thread from 96 I think that recomends Golden Specto oil
10.If your FJ shifts sort of clunky and feels 'sticky', replace
your oil with Golden Spectro 4 (20W-50). It costs $5.00 a
quart, but it makes a dramatic difference in transmission
performance, and no other oil seems to do this.
Has anyone tried this oil ? What did you think ?
I have used golden spectro in both my legends it is a good oil for the clutch.
Both cars shift differently with the same oil, so I believe that some motors shift better than others.
Seems like the later model engines shift better.
Let the comments start here
I use carquest 20/50 in my cars and bikes, but I change it every 2 races. With the thought that no oil likes going over 300 degrees, we can peg a 340 oil temp gauge in 15 laps out of 25 the oil gets real hot.
Amsoil is a very good oil, my division is sponsored by amsoil they have great products.
A buddy of mine runs it in his kids car changes it every 3 races at 9ish a quart x 4 and he runs about 15 degrees cooler, if I got help I might try something different.
The local carquest guy tries help me out where he can.

Okay here it goes.... I was just curious if anyone has had any good experience with redline oil?
Normally I don't respond to oil threads but since you asked.....
Yes, I use 10w-40 detergent Redline oil in my bikes. Shifting is as good as with Golden Spectro or Rotella.
What I notice with Redline is that on long hot summer trips my oil consumption is very little, if any. This oil stands up to the heat well. With regular synthetics I have to add about 1/4 quart every 2k miles. Redline does not burn out like other oils do.
Having just put in Mobil 1 and my trans needing some work I am thinking towards the next change when I should be droping the engine and changing out the trans gears.I might look for some Golden Spectro then.I noticed my bike seemed to run smoother with the Mobil 1 but the clutch slips a little.I run cheap oil (premix) in my 2 smoke waverunners when most swear by Clots Amsoil etc,You go through a lot of oil with the 2 smokes but the bike only needs a few quarts every few thousand mies so I dont mind spending $$ to get a quallity oil.
I may just try out some Golden Spectro :good2:
Here in the Uk. I use Rockoil Guardian 20w50, abought £25
for , 4 litres. It seems to make the engine, trans, and clutch
a lot smoother in operation. The bike runs at 80-85 degrees centigrade
1989 fj1200 3cv 74000 miles on clock
I'm with Pat on Redline. It is the best oil I've used in any of my bikes. It does not burn off like other oils and it keep the motor shifting good for 3-4k miles.

10w-40 detergent Redline oil is that synthetic or dino oil

All Redline products are full ester based synthetic. They make a non-detergent racing oil, (red label) and a detergent street oil (blue label)
I use the blue label detergent oil.
Cheers!

I use Rotella T syn 5w40. But do not ride a huge amount in the winter. It is by the way a product of the Shell Corperation.

Well fancy that - Shell names all their oils after species of shell fish... Microgaza Rotella is a species the Trochidae family of molluscs - apparently made from the ground up testicles of the male Rotella :wacko3:. Mmmmm, maybe try some on toast with vegemite....

Why on earth would you want to ruin perfectly good Mollusk Mountain Oysters with Vegemite? :bad:

I know I am sleep deprived but I can't stop laughing at the popcorn smiley. That's some funny shit because you know it's exactly what the 42 other "members" viewing the post are doing, watching and waiting for the action. Lurkers, nay, voyeurs.

I thought it was pretty funny too, I would like to thank Randy T. for the great idea, and Marsh for making it happen.
Not only is it my new favorite smiley but most of the time the most appropriate one too.

Thanks, Travis... not my idea, though. I see it on STN all the time.
BTW, you still haven't told us what kind of popcorn oil you prefer.

I'm not falling for that trick.
Also, what is the size for the large gasket that goes to the back of the oil filter? The one that came with the K&N filter I bought was to big.

The first time I replaced that large o-ring I thought it was too big..............after holding it in place, and kinda forcing it down into the groove around the housing, I got it to go all the way in...........Takes a bit of working, but it goes......
Now every time I buy the K&N oil filter, I go through that process.....
I thought about putting it in the freezer for a while to maybe shrink it, but I haven't tried it, cause I've always been able to work it into the groove.
Unfortunately when I tried to force it down in there I thought I had it but when I tightened it down it must have popped out so it got pinched in half. I'll remember that for next time so I make sure it's in there a little better. Thanks.
