Title: Backfire frags the airbox!
Post by: Splash on September 25, 2010, 09:58:50 PM
...and set the filter on fire! Wow what a way to start the weekend. My guess is some fuel gathered in a place it's not supposed to be and detonated on starting. Good excuse for pod filters now that the airbox is fractured.

Impressive...!   :bomb:

Seriously sucks though.

If you choose to go with pods, give Randy a call/PM/email for UNI pods.  Great service and great pricing.  I'm sure he'll have suggestions for jetting or there are a few threads on that here too.  Should be a thread where people are giving their jetting setups that have worked for them also.  http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=1974.0 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=1974.0)

Have you replaced the o-rings that go around the needle seats?  Sounds like they may have leaked and dribbled gas out the carb intakes.   Have you noticed any fuel smell around the bike when parked or any fuel dripping from the overflows?

I replaced the o-rings as you suggested, and took extra efforts to make sure everything was set correctly.

Yay! It started and ran on gas, but now I found the need to adjust the valve clearances. I was lazy and hoped the PO might have taken a little more care of the bike. Nope, not the case.

The carbs are marked as if they were disassembled at some point but that doesn't mean they knew what they were doing.

Grrrr, mad at myself.

I can fix the airbox, and add clearance for the inline filter while I'm at it. TY for the offer Eric, I'll make this one work; it's just a split seam really.
