OK so I got hold of a standard length gear lever and fitted it the other day, and now the gear lever is being fouled on downshifts by the spring for the side stand. Do I need to just bend the lever out a little or is something amiss here?
:shok:
It sounds like your kick stand is bent or more than likely worn out. When the shaft and stand hole get worn the stand tends to stick out when up.
Also you can adjust the shifter up a bit, clears the issue completely.
I tried adjusting, by the time I get it high enough to clear it feels wrong.
Is your sidestand pivot sloppy?
Mine was, and the shift lever would contact it on downshifts......
There used to be a thin metal sleeve that the sidestand pivots on. Mine was completely worn out..
I fixed mine by finding the right diameter, and thickness washer to just take up the slack when bolted back together....
Put some fresh grease on the pivot, and works perfectly.
It no longer contacts the shifter. :good:
I replaced the sidestand because of this on my '90.... hasn't been a problem since. I tried shimming and some other 1/2assed tricks, but they never worked for more than a few days... I have ~3 years or so on the fresh stand.
