Hey Guys - I would like to thank all for inputs and referrals.I chose the the 89 with 8500 miles for 4000.Looks like it just came out of box.But if i may- let me explain how this seller got his bike sold -there has to be a moral somewhere here.I have been looking for right 1989 FJ1200 since May but didn't place a WANTED AD until last week. Why -Before summer everything is priced high for junk and no one is Motivated to sell. Its september now and sellers are motivated to unload - so i thought.I placed WANTED AD here and another site.2 sellers emailed me and i found 2 other fjs on web that weren't for sale but i offered to buy.4 bikes now -4 sellers emailing me interested to sell.I emailed all 4 sellers back and left them MY CELL PHONE NUMBER to call me.Only one guy called me-the one with 8500 miles for 4000.In talking with him he said he could send detailed pictures but it would take a few days because of family business but will stay in contact by PHONE.No problem.Because i was also seriously looking at one of the bikes that wasn't originally for sale but i offered to buy -i just needed pictures from this guy.He said he wanted 3000.So i email him for pictures and to CALL ME.No response.Email him again -No response. This goes on for 3 days. The price didn't matter -it just had to be what i wanted.4000 for bike,700 to ship,400 tax and reg,150 for NOS Supertrapp that i found on ebay back in june. You do the math -it just had to be right bike.Still no emails or PHONE CALLS from 3000 seller.Today the seller of the 4000 bike calls me and says he sent me photos.Let me look at pics and i will CALL you back. The bike is exactly what i was looking for -CALLED him back -asked about history, mechanical condition - SOLD.I told him let me go to bank, get cashiers check,go to post office and send money via express mail.Give me about an hour -i will CALL YOU back.Did as i mentioned,CALLED him back said i sent off cashiers check and post office said you should have tomorrow by three.Let check clear bank then CALL ME back and i will then make arrangement for transporter you pickup.Done.I get off phone with seller and decide to check emails and who do you think now leaves me an email. The guy who i have been emailing for three days who is asking 3000 for his bike. His email reads as i quote"I have gotten all your emails but i am planning a long weekend and in no rush to sell bike - i will try to send pictures sometime next week and i feel 3000 is a fair price." My response email was as follows " i just now got your email but one hour before i sent a cashiers check for 4000 for another bike. This is why i leave a CELL PHONE NUMBER so as a buyer i am not held hostage waiting for sellers email-i have lost out before.IF some says SERIOUS BUYER - CASH IN HAND -Jump on it .Thanks for your time" I have bought many bikes, parts, stuff and have always found that If someone wants to do business and i give a PHONE NUMBER and they will only reply thru email -You are getting stroked. Remember -"Buyers are liars and sellers are story tellers!"
SMUG ALERT! http://www.southparkstudios.com/episodes/103216 (http://www.southparkstudios.com/episodes/103216)
I was not going to be held hostage by a buyer either (I'm mentioned in that rambling message).
Glad you found your bike, even more so that you did not buy mine.

Hello Steve - Yes i am very interested. Please email me pictures.Like i mentioned i really don't want to restore another bike which involves repolishing lower legs on forks, all weathered aluminum foot controls repaint cracking and chipped tank and plastics etc...I am a painter by trait and have done the $80,000 harleys for people.I mention this not to inpress you but i know quality and am looking for RIGHT bike.Have cash in hand.I am not looking for deal-just the right one. If you can send pics of frame ,around frame area where header goes into head. This tells if frames' rusting, the forks, rotors and calipers, foot control areas, dash and overall closeups of bike. The photos that i saw shows a very clean bike but not closeup to see if everything is weather pitting. Also i don't know anything about bike - mileage, history, second gear issues, etc. My email ***** cell ***** Again not looking for deal.If you have what im looking for 3000 no problem and i will have it shipped to me - Thanks Mike

Hello Steve - I sent you two emails yesterday and have not heard back from you.If you are having second thoughts that is ok just let me know.2 other bikes have surfaced yesterday as well.I placed an ad in forum on fjowners.com in the parts for sale section.A original owner 89 white 8500 miles for 4000 is suppose to send pics today and a 89 listed on ebay last night that also has ad on texas craigslist for 3400.I am still interested in looking at yours not because it is 3000 but because it looks very clean. In my ad over at fjowners.com i said i will pay 3000 to 4000 for a 3000 to 4000 condition bike.Again not looking for deal bike just right bike.If you still are interested i prefer you call me at ***** .I am 47 years old and like to direct talk and not all this todays eeemmmaaaiillliinngg. If i don't hear back from you soon i am assuming you decided to keep and going to make a decision on other 2 soon.Your bike looks great and i would understand why you may keep it.Thanks

Hello Steve I just now got your emails. One hour before i sent the owner of other 89 with 8500 miles a cashiers check for 4000 and am having that shipped to me.I would of liked to of seen yours but the reason i give my phone number out is because as a buyer you are held hostage until people decide to email back.I have lost out before because of this. When someone says "cash in hand" and gives phone number,if you are serious seller - jump on it.Thanks again
Steve-
I seriously doubt that Mike wants his cell phone/ email posted out there.
Anyway, seems to me he described it like it was. If he gives you his cell, and you want to do business with him/ follow-up, at very least stay in touch via email. This kills me when contractors, electricians, plumbers etc, set a time and then simply fail to call when they're late, leaving me to wait when I could be doing something else.
You don't really want to sell him your bike, no problem, just tell him that up front. If you did want to sell it, then you lost out because you did not stay in touch.

He contacted me on a site that I rarely, if ever, check the PM's. Whoopie.
I'm sure I came across as a jerk, I know the buyer sure did to me.

You are right, I should of "cleansed" his cell phone from my post, my error.
Why the guy was all of the sudden in such a hurry is beyond me, he stated he had been looking for a long time.
I found mine on Craigslist pretty darn quickly, and for $2500.00, not sure why he claimed he searched it for all these months to no avail.
Not a loss on my end, and he found what he wanted.

Quote08-31-2010 Re: Want to sell your FJ

Sorry for the late reply - My FJ1200 is in excellent shape, and I'd sell it. I just installed 2 new tires, Avon's, front and rear. Adjusted the valves, full service and tune up, just returned from a several hundred mile ride, it's great.
I paid $2500.00 because it was in great shape, added the full tune up, service and tires, I'd like $3000.00 for it.
Can send pictures, you could fly into KC and ride back or for a few $$$ I'd ride it out west and deliver it myself.
Quote09-03-2010 Re: Yes or NO FJ1200 FOR SALE

I had replied back, thought it was from this site. Anything is for sale. If you want to see additional pictures, let me know. 33,000 miles, new tires and full service (oil change, valve adj, carb synch, etc). I'd take $3000.00 for it. Fly in to KC and ride it home! Or, I'd possibly ride it out for a nominal fee.

Yeah, email sucks sometimes, and I obviously do not check the messages on the forums enough. The only suggestion I have is for you to be patient, there are plenty of really decent FJ1200's out there - I've got a big weekend planned, may not be able to call until next week. I'm not in any hurry to sell or not sell mine, but I believe it is priced fair and it is in good condition.

I'd still sell mine - and buy another. These are great motorcycles.
I tried to play nice.
Best deal on "Monkey Butt" is at Costco.
Spoken like a true spooner :yahoo:
How's this for unusual? My friend found an ad in the local paper for an 85, we went 10 min away to look at it,found a beautiful 14000mi all original bike. Haggling was done face to face, money was exchanged, hands were shook and everybody is happy. This happened today right in front of god and everyone :good2:
why do you like the 89 so much ?
Had one new, still has sportbike feel, quickest year produced, cleanest color combo.Gold accents on rotors and calibers give bike a european flavor.Has best visual impact-my opinion. But all fjs 1100 or 1200 are worth owning -don't want to offend other fj owners.
Quote from: lawson on September 12, 2010, 02:35:47 AM
quickest year produced
That's debatable, didn't the 86 have the quickest quarter mile time?
yes the 86 had the best 1/4 mile time........test run by a midget with ninja like reflexes ...
Yes -you are right this is debatable. The 86 had a better 1/4 et but the 89 was quicker in roll-on performance. Here's why i feel 89 is quickest year.I had 89 new back in 89 and had friends with 86's.Remembering back then 89 felt more responsive between the two -which is why i went with 89.As we all did the first add on was installing Supertrapp. With both bikes -86 and 89,having Supertrapps and all else being equal the 89 walks away from 86.I remember seeing friends 86 in my mirror. The reason why is the end pipe -megaphone-on a 89-90 Supertrapp is 6" shorter than Supertrapp for a 84-87.Better pipe was made for 89 -90 by Supertrapp.Part number on end pipe for 89 is 027-4120 and 86 is 027-3070.The number is stamped on flange tab. Also for anyone with 91 -93 number is 027-4122.The supertrapp for 91-93 is a system only for these years.Earlier year Supertrapp WILL NOT FIT 91-93.It requires a "s" pipe that goes between header and end pipe which came with system new -where previous year Supertrapps were end pipe into header. So be aware of this if one comes up on ebay and you think you have a Supertrapp now for your 91.
uhh, come to a rally and try your roll on. all the fj's hang together with ease.
Eh, just throw some gear at it if you want better rollons..
ohh that's it, roll on.
I don't like roll on.
I find it easier skipping the rooooooooooooolllllllllllll on, by down shifting a gear (or 2)
Travis, you would have to be going slow in the first place in order to accelerate up again. Doesn't seem like that's a problem very often. You seem to stay above any midrange flat spot. But maybe I should put a Supertrapp on my "new" bike and come over to run against you. Just for research of course.
Doug
Face it gentlemen, any year - equally equipped -1989 is the better bike.I would love to attend Your rallies and roll-on but just about ever bike pictured here has more luggage on it than a 3 week hawaiian vacation. Are you guys motorcyclist or tree huggers. If this doesn't get the fighting started i don't know what else i could do.Ha Ha -but i'm in!

One space will do, Dan. The whole "two spaces after periods" thing is an old standard that applies to typewriters, which had a standard spacing between each letter. Computer fonts are designed better than that, so one single space is the style standard. Lawson just wasn't using any spaces at all.
Seriously tho - If you want to see the specs and performance charts that backup my claim on 89 visit www.kz1000r.com (http://www.kz1000r.com) which support facts
LOL :yahoo:
Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the '86 use a 41 tooth rear sprocket and the 89 and up used a 40 tooth?
Gearing makes a difference - while one tooth may not seem like a lot, it would make a difference at the strip.
Yes you are correct and the 84-85 had 42. But the 89 has 4hp more over 86-87. Isn't that an 89 thats appearing in your i.d. box to the left - 89 owners don't go against other 89 owners on this topic - :dash2:

i've been running that engine for the last three years.... i can tell ya all about it..... sounds like a small block chevrolet V8.... catches revs like a formula 1 car and accelerates so hard it can blur my vision.....will snatch the front wheel up and spin the tire at the same time in about any gear depending on throttle usage (be careful what you wish for).
one issue with the lightened crank is that the bike will DE-celerate as fast as it accelerates so i gotta be careful about chopping the throttle lest me manly bits gets smashed against the tank. BTDT hated it
over 80 ft/lbs of torque are available from 3000 RPMS so driving out of a corner and hauling my luggage isnt really an issue... :good2:
the most fun is pulling sportbikers off the line.... nothing seems to make them feel better than seeing a bike with luggage take the holeshot and pull them to a hundred or so ( i usually roll out about then cause i need my license for work ).... LMFAO!

Hey Frank, if you had to do it over again...would you lighten the crank?
Pat,
yes i would do it again .... it was quite a learning curve with this engine ( in more ways than one ) but after getting about 20K miles on it i have my right hand calibrated better......smooth is the key word.
what the lightened crank provides when you really want to get on it is priceless.... especilly with flatslides.
snap the flatslides open at 3 grand and it hits like a very big and pissed off two stroke coming up on the pipe
instant go literally..... its got so much torque i take off from stops in second gear most times using no more throttle than i used to use in first with the stock engine. (and i'm talking "taking off" in second)
with stock carbs .... snap the throttle open at 3 grand and the revs still build much quicker than with a stock crank... but you have to wait about a half a second while the slides open... .then the kookaloo comes.
the stock carbs help smooth out ham fisted throttle applications (deceleration especially ) and to be honest they do really well and pull to about 9200 RPM (and plenty fast) before they cant flow any more and it falls on its face.... the FCR's will pull all the way to 10500 with much more on the big end.
IE more speed gained vs.time........ hypothetically speaking :unknown:
.Kookaloo!

I'm no expert Frank, [I've only got the one] but that does not look at all like a penis to me. Perhaps you've got a set of Freudian glasses on?
Just checking.
Dan
no thats what i meant.
Kookaloo!
I posted pictures of differences between Supertrapps in misc fj gallery. I also posted pictures of Bassani system that i have for another member who posted an ad because he didn't know what he had on his fj -which is a Bassani slip-on system
i must say thats a tardy piece of engine there!!! cant wait to one day do mine... sold my gpz 1000rx, not doing anything but mainteneace to the fj till the gsx is on the road then the effy comes off the road to get its loving.... being lazy or patient i cant work out which one...... :sarcastic:.... still thinking along the lines of a kerker exhaust for the old girl.... yoshi kit for the gsx es..... ahhhh the pipe dreams you can have.... lol either that or buy another drum kit.... chuckles

.......The reason why is the end pipe -megaphone-on a 89-90 Supertrapp is 6" shorter than Supertrapp for a 84-87.Better pipe was made for 89 -90 by Supertrapp.Part number on end pipe for 89 is 027-4120 and 86 is 027-3070.The number is stamped on flange tab.
Does anyone know what makes the 91 -& later bikes different than earlier models so that they require a different end pipe and the additional "s" pipe? I have a 1992 FJ and purchased a used Supertrapp exhaust, but it has the the 027-4120 (89-90?) pipe :dash2:. I have fabrication skills and the tools that go with them, but wonder how challenging the adaptation might be, prior to removing my functional but leaky (gaskets) stock exhaust.

AFAIK the only difference in the pipes are the mounting point locations for the exhaust Can... everything else is the same.

Thanks Racerman. I'll find out for sure over the winter. They're forecasting a wetter and colder winter here in Seattle, so there will be time that the bike sits idle and I won't feel bad about having it apart.
