Sorry i posted this on one of the other sections, so i'm reposting. Does anyone have any pics of fjs like this? I'm getting ready to build my own arm and put a 250 on my 84 fj that i picked up for $300.
Hello Chad, welcome.
Nope, never seen one one on a FJ. The largest I've seen was a 190/50-17 rear tire. (UK FJ site)
A 250 wheel huh? On a $300 motorcycle? Hmmmm. (I was gonna ask why? but I won't)
Ok I'll play....
First off:
No way, no how, will a 250 wide tire and the necessary 7 or 8" wide rim will fit a FJ swing arm.
1) You will need to get a custom swing arm made, then you will find;
2).The sprocket on the wide rim will stick out so far so to allow the chain to clear the side of the 250 tire, meaning the chain line will be waaaay outside the countershaft sprocket on the FJ motor.
A couple of options;
First: When you get your custom swing arm fabricated you can get a jack shaft included to handle the offset chain or, Second: Get a custom longer output shaft made for the FJ and install a output shaft support plate like the drag racers do. Take look at Sandy Kosman's catalog and you will find these output shaft support plates for Kawasaki and Suzuki drag bikes....alas nothing for the old FJ... http://www.kosman.net/ (http://www.kosman.net/)

Thank you Pat. And hopefully i'll get some pics of my bike on here soon. ya i knew i was going to haft to run a jack shaft arm, was just was wanting to see if there where any pics out there. oh and believe it or not even though i only paid 300 for my bike it is in great shape. it has V&H supersport pipe, flatslides, filters, coils and 2nd gear was replaced.
Something like this?

ya thats about what im going to do to mine. i mite even sell my 250 and go ahead and go with a 300 since im going to have to build my own jack shaft arm anyway

What's the widest one they make?
That's what I'd put on there. :i_am_so_happy:

I agree. :good2: In MotoGP they are running, what, 400 or 450 wide rear tires now? While that kind of advanced racing technology may not have trickled down to us mere mortals yet - at least with a 250 or 300 wide rear we can dream of riding like Rossi as we take those corners! :rofl:
And maybe you can get rid of that pesky side stand too!
Don't know if i will be doing any of that but i love the low, long, loud & wide. The biggest i've heard of was a 460.
i'm really wanting to do some motor work and get some respectable power out of it.(over stock) Oh and put a spider pipe on it.

Well ya, if yer gonna do all the work to get that 460 under there, ya gotta do somethin about that wimpy-assd stock motor. :biggrin:

ya and i'll take either one in this case. :biggrin:
Hey Chad, we missed your introduction. Tell us about yourself and your experience with motorcycles. I'm curious. Tell us about your bike collection, your favorites, etc....
TIA Pat
Ok i've been riding for about 20 yrs. the 1st bike i rode was the fj i just purchased. i rode it when i was 14. then i bought a 1992 GSXR 750 owned it for yrs then sold it and went to riding a busa. then the fj came up for sale and i couldn't pass it up so i bought it. my favorite is still a busa but really just like bikes in general. i'm in to drag racing so power is my addiction. but not really into all out drag bikes, like street/strip bikes. well more later got a wedding to get to.
Jackshaft would probably be the easiest way to go.
Sounds like it would end up being more of a poser bike than anything, but I can relate to the drag racing part of it all.
Not sure that much rubber would make it launch any harder or quicker though, their is a limit and a balance, to each their own.
Car tires on the rear - I know several people running them on certain motorcycles (GL1800's, STAR cruisers, one on a Triumph Rocket III, etc) and they love them. Sure, there is some trade off in handling but it is not that bad and everyone seems to be more than able to adapt.
30-40,000 miles out of a car tire on a tire is not unheard of.
There's a reason why drag racers don't use a 240/300 wheel kit.
If you really want to make a badass bike in that style, I'd consider doing the entire backhalf thing and putting a big car tire under it. Doesn't matter though, unless you go with forced induction there won't be enough power to really require this much tire, so it'll be slower than when you started out.
There may be a reason they don't use them but i after a curtain look. A balance between look and power.

Imagine what learning how to ride could do ... :lol:
Finally found all the parts and peices that i need for my jack shaft swing arm. Now just have to put the design on paper and then start ordering parts and doing the mock up.
Found an example of it being done.
"Marco from TKT spockets allready had a lot of experience with wide-tyre converions and offset sprockets.
In 2002 he had showed us his FJ1200 project with 240-section tyre at the HOK14 party."
