[img]brought a 1988 fj1200 off ebay for $1500 80000km has bad knocking sound from left side at low idle i hope its just starter.
I followed the carb cleaning guide by David Raforth in file section and found it very straight forward.
I found a stuck float and a broken pilot jet on carb 1, totallay clogged with rust deposits and I changed o-rings. I don't know how it was running at all. i am still waiting for new pilot jet, but i am hoping that this will fix knocking sound from left.
The fuel tank has rust patches on the bottom should i use that kreem liner stuff.
Road worthy issues-
one of the front disc rotors is worn would like to know legal rotor wear size.
one of the mirrors has lost some of its backing and is patchy.
front tyre has small cracks in side wall.
hair line crack in rear brake light.
stay away from the creme tank liner......
Eric M
have already brought some creme tank liner why should i not use it

Many have reported that Kreem tank liner can cause more problems than it cures.
Front rotors new = 4mm........ replace at 3.5 mm
OEM mirrors may still be available.......check out the vendor section.
There have been many threads on replacement mirrors........ try typing mirrors in the search area (top rh box next to the NEWS button)
Replace that front tyre.
brake/tail light assemblies may also still be available, but there are usually 1 or 2 on eBay. If you can't find one, I have one here in Aus, but postage would be the deciding factor.
Cheers

thanks for that info Harvy

Look Here: http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=302.msg2227#msg2227 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=302.msg2227#msg2227)
I put carbies back on, air box was a barstard to get on propaly started it up and sounds so much better.
I could hardy hear rattle from left side.
I will make that carb sync tool tomorrow thanks for that link.
What a great forum this is.
Nooo!!!! You've broken the seal!!!
Now that you've successfully worked on your FJ, it's only a matter of time until a "quick" changing of the fork seals turns into a rebuild turns into a set of emulators with springs turns into a swap. Then the rear will need to match, with a shock rebuild, then a shock, then a wheel swap, then a swingarm swap. Of course the handling will require more power to match, so a pipe and jetting and airbox removal and headwork and cams and may as well do an overbore and new pistons and...
Kidding aside, congrats on your new ride!
not sure on tyre sizes for the front 120/80/v16 or 120/70/v17
its got 120/80/v16 at the moment but some owners mauals say 120/70/v17
i am asuming that 120/70/v17 will give more feel

What size is your WHEEL ? You can't mount a 16" tire on a 17" rim and vice versa!
The wheel size will be cast into it either on the rim or one of the spokes.
Be careful with that homemade manometer and don't 'blip' the throttle when its hooked up or you're likely to suck the fluid into the engine. This won't cause any harm, but won't help you sync your carbs either.
Next time you decide to remove the carbs and/or airbox.... First remove the 17mm bolts next to the battery box and slightly loosen the bolts near the footrest plates. Then you can rotate the seat subframe back/down and get enough room to work reasonably comfortably.
Also, if you want or need some assistance (or special tools) I'm near Geelong and have a large shed to work in.
Welcome to the FJ group.
Cheers,
Arnie
'88 FJ is 3rd Gen, and should have a 120/70X17" tire mounted..... But, if it has a 16" tire on it, something has been changed.
The FJ in your avatar is an '89, going by the paint, and has the 17" wheel.
well i drop it testing it out because of old front tyre and brakes that didn't seem to have any bite then all the sudden bit hard and greasy roads.
It happened slowing down to pulling into my driveway I felt like such a idiot.
The engine and transmission felt very strong a smooth.
I droped it on the right side so need crankcase cover, little oil cover thing and air intake scoop
any help would be greatly appreciated

I've got one that looks just like that!.....bloody rear brake lever!
Harvy
harvy if you have crankcase cover without a hole in it how much plus mail to brisbane as i will be there in 2 weeks
I'm afraid not mate..........as I said, I have a clutch cover in exactly the same condition as the one in your pic.......sorry mate.
Harvy
I have got the parts for a wreckers at a good price
I am a bit worried that there may be some little pieces of metal floating around inside engine for the smashed cover is there anything i can do besides oil and filter change
I disassembled the brake calipers and there was some jammed pistons, the piston dust seals were clogged up bad, but when reassembling i seemed to be braking the dust seals is this
just because there old or am i doing something wrong.
If they are hard, replace them.... they're pretty inexpensive. RPM Randy may stock them.
