Looking out at the market, the R1 rear rim is much more prevalent than the FZ1000 rear rim. With enough money and time you can get anything to work.... with that being said.....
Anyone with experience on swapping out the rear rim with the rim from an R1. I know some stuff will have to be machined but I'm looking for some general thoughts on the ease of the swap.
Are those rims even comparable?
Thanks

The first place to look is the wheel bearings.
The right (brake) side is pretty easy. The stock bearing is a 6205-2rs measuring 25id x 52od x 15w the FJ axle and hardware is 20mm, Luckily there is a 20id x 52od x 15w bearing, numbered 6304-2rs.
It gets a little trickier on the drive side as Yamaha uses a needle bearing arangement with a machined collar that the axle rides in. This may be fairly easily replicated, but It is a highly precision part. I did not look at the cush drive bearing.
Once the wheel fits your axle you will need to center it, ensure clearance and figure out sprocket and rotor spacing. Keep in mind the R1 used a 6" wheel as opposed to the FZ1 and FZR1000 5.5" clearance may be an issue.
Its not impossible, but there are probably easier or cheaper ways to get the same result. Possibly the tried and true FZ1 swingarm swap?
The R1 rim will not work in the fj swingarm .
you will have to do the whole swingarm swap with all the cheese for the R1.
I think it can be done. The FJ-FJR-UK site has at least 2 pics of R1 wheels on FJs. Maybe worth a little digging.

If you converted over to a G1 FZ1 swingarm and then did my FZ1 to R1 reer wheel conversion it would be a snap :good:
link from fjfjr.co.uk to fj mods sit that covers the conversion to fz1000

shouldnt be too hard to then swap a r1 rear tire in.

As is frequently said concerning other subjects, "bigger is not always better" and "It's not the size, but how you use it". :-)
Enjoy what you got.
Cheers,
Arnie
i did the complete upgrade.i was going to do just the wheel but the swingarm conversion was easier... pretty easy work after all was said and done. if you want details let me know.

Where's the write up?!
Did this on the dragbike project - no mods to the rim, but requires an offset countershaft sprocket and offsetting the arm (rim remains centered in the chassis).
There you go G2 or later R1 wheel in a G1 FZ1 swing arm.

Not a problem Kim........ any chance we non-fz1oa members can see them somewhere?
Or should I just join YAF (yet another forum).

Why not install a early '90's GSXR1100 wheel?
Easiest swap into the FJ you cna do.
