Hi Guys,
I am posting this as a new thread since I have tried some things to adapt the CBR 600 mirrors and want to let folks know what will not work and help owners of these years (including me) to find a workable solution. Since I haven't gotten any suggestions as to how to get the bottom edge of the mirrors horizontal I took the bull by the horns and tried two things:
Attempt 1. I determined that the stalks are metal and decided to try to bend one. I thought that it might bend more easily if I cut about 1/3 of the way through the stalk at the apex of the outside radius of the needed bend before heating it. I did this, heated the stalk up with a torch until I thought it was just short of melting, attempted to bend it (which required a surprising amount of pressure) and broke it right off.
Attempt 2. Since what prevents the mirror from being adjustable sufficiently downward to get horizontal appears to be the base of the pod actually holding the mirror running into the edge of the cup holding the ball that allows the mirror pod to pivot in multiple directions I decided to relieve the cup in the area where greater rotation is needed. That done, I found out that there is an internal limiter which prevents enough rotation.
So, it looks like unless one is comfortable with a rather odd "rabbit ear" look to the mirrors the CBR 600-1000 mirrors will NOT work on 86-87 bikes and neither will the Emgo universals. This leads back to the thread header. Does anyone know about an OEM mirror which actually will work well, which can be adapted to bikes or these model years?
Thanks!
Dr. Jay
I tried the CBR1000 mirrors on my '86. I put a double bend in the stalk...it took a lot of heat and considerable force. They looked OK, but the boot never fit quite right, and the view wasn't any better than stock. I finally ended up drilling and tapping the bar-ends and using cheap-ass bar-end mirrors, with some flush-fit plastic plugs in the original fairing holes.
They still suck.

I would look at bikes with similar mounting styles. The 87 is a top mount design while bikes like the CBR and later model FJ's are side mount.
Bikes that come to mind are : first gen FZ1, FJR1300 and 20008 gsxr 600-1000. I m sure there are many others, but if I were looking I would start there. Once you fine appropriate mounts check to bolt spacing to see if it can be made to work.

well you can forget about the FJR and first gen FZ1 unless you want to get creative on cast pot metal with a torch......
BTDT no fit.

I will try to get a measurement on the GSXR...

I have an '02 GSXR750 sitting my garage right now, let me know if I can measure anything for anyone.
Also, on the Gixxer, I found that the mirrors were not all that great in that they showed a great reflection of my shoulder/ elbow, but not so much the road behind me. So I added some mirror extenders like these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/02-03-GSXR750-GSXR600-Mirror-Spacers-Extenders-750-600-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3a53c99657QQitemZ250513823319QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/02-03-GSXR750-GSXR600-Mirror-Spacers-Extenders-750-600-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3a53c99657QQitemZ250513823319QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories)
Ebay id: 250513823319
They look a slight bit dorkey, but they show MUCH more of what's behind me without having to tuck in my elbows and lean over. Above 90 mph they get a bit more blurry than without them, but at those speeds I'm not staring at my mirrors anyway.
Again, let me know if I can measure anything.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the comments so far, they are appreciated and informative. I think The Fan made a key point in that what I need is a top rather than side mount mirror, one that puts the angle of the stalk in the correct orientation for the mirror to be able to go to the horizontal position within its limited range of adjustment. The FZ1 and FJR 1300 look potentially usable, but the base (as was pointed out) won't work. What is needed is a mirror stalk which has a flat and bolt hole at the bottom that can fit (or at least be modified to fit) the FJ base to allow fore and aft movement of the stalk. The neat thing about the CBR 600 mirrors was that they bolted up perfectly with just the addition of a shim washer. The FZ1 and FJR 1300 bases have bolts built into them such that new holes and much tinkering with the fairing would be need to fit them. The 2008 GSXR mirrors do seem to be pretty much top mounted, but they have built in turn signals which makes them expensive and also look like they don't really belong on the FJ. Additionally, I am not sure that they have the flattened, with bolt hole, style bottom stalk end that the FJ needs.
If I don't get any more leads here on the forum, tomorrow I'll go to a couple of the bigger used bike lots in town and start peeking under mirror boots of any top mount style mirrors I can find and report progress or lack thereof tomorrow evening.
Thanks Again to All,
Dr. Jay
Hi Guys,
After checking out all the local dealerships new and used bikes I have found exactly zero with mirrors that look like they could be made to work on the 86-87 FJ models. The vast bulk of mirrors available are side mount style and the few that I did find that were top mount did not have a lower stalk end that could be adapted to the FJ bracket. What is funny is that in my searching I found a rather ratty 86 FJ tucked away in the back of a dealership (asking $3600 !) with perfect mirrors. I offered them my mirrors, which are fine except for a ring of de-silvering toward the outer edge, and $100 to swap out the mirrors on their ratty FJ and was turned down.
So at this point I'll just live with what I have but remain a relentless mirror checker-outer in the hope that I'll run across something that can be adapted. If I do find something that works I'll post the info in a new thread since I am sure there are other folks who could use a solution.
Cheers,
Dr. Jay
Here's what Bob came up with (before he found a pair of 86' mirrors) he used 1100 mirrors sideways with original mounts.
took him a couple of times to get them tensioned properly but worked pretty well while he had them.

I could see behind me pretty well just a little elbow in the way. I'm 6 foot 210 lbs
They make these mirrors aftermarket but they don't have the vibration weight in them, so they vibrate more than the stock yamaha mirrors do. (but they are cheap to see if you like them)
I also use these on my racecar that's why I know about the differences in the weighted ones verses the non weighted ones.
Hope this helps
Bob
To hell with the mirrors, I love the maxi pads on the forks. And to think I drained all the oil to stop mine from leaking...
Hey Doug
Leave my diapers alone . or the price of my 89 is going up :rofl2:
That was when I first got the old girl. I didn't know if it was going to run well, or a all. The fork tubes were junk and I needed parts. (me the parts guy needing parts thats so wrong) So it was one of the last things I did. (cheaper the bike the more it needs) glad thats all behind me know.
Keep a fall ride in mind. :yahoo:

Cold (dense!) air + rich jetting + cold tires = tire smokin fun! You're gonna need diapers if we roll when it's 40 degrees colder!

I was able to install a set of mirrors off of a late model CBR1000.
The mounts had to be slotted a bit to match the FJ holes, but they looked like they belonged on the bike.
You can get the aftermarket ones for a reasonable price.
I'll try to figure out what year they came off of.
MC
^ on what?
Different years need different mirrors.
Define late model CBR1000? The RR or the F model?
That woud be from th "F"
mc
Err, I mean the RR.
Sorry about that, just getting my first cup of coffee. not quite with it yet.

Didn't help your post count any... the last four have been stuck on fourteen.

Maybe it only counts quality posts, not filler and cracking wise. But then I would only have a count of about 2 if that were the case.
One more useless post for me!
