I am starting to search the depths of ebay and local MC wreckers for the needed parts for my front and rear tire wheel conversion.
What I am looking for after reading through the recommendations are a 87 or 88 FXR1000 front wheel, 89 or up FZR 1000 rear wheel, 1989 FJ forks and R1 or R6 front brake calipers and master cylinder.
Question:
Are there a difference between FZR600 and FZR1000 wheels?
Will gold dot R1 brakes work on the FJ forks?
What front brake rotors should I use?
What is the recommended master cylinder and will it work with the stock lever?
Really looking forward to updating this bike. Shelved the Idea of replacing her when I rode the late model stuff that was available. The FJ seems to do it all, and in style.

It's an fZr1000 frt. wheel....
As long as the calipers are NOT radial mount, they'll bolt up. All the monobloc calipers use the same bolt spacing. Any mc used with the monoblocs are GTG, the FJR and FZ models have an integral reservoir, so are a bit more desiralble.
Couldn't tell you about those particular wheels, Yamaha's 'fiche may help, here (http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/parts/home.aspx), just follow the prompts.

Don, I have a few suggestions .
the fzr600 wheel is 5" wide and will fit a 170 tire , the fzr1000 wheel is 5.5" and will take a 180 tire.
get the fjr clutch and brake masters (any year)
gold dots will work for your calipers
the standard 89 and up brake rotors for the fj will work on the fzr wheel .
Now as long as you are looking for forks you may want to get the 87-88 fzr forks along with the wheel .
If you do you get 320mm rotors for better braking. the lowers of the forks is really all you need cause you can use the 86 tubes in them.
bigger brakes is always good.

Pretty sure you meant the
YZF600 rear rim is 5" wide. The
FZR600 has a narrow 18" rear rim that people used to swap out in order to get a 17" rim.
For the front, it takes a lot of work to adapt a 89+ FZR1000 rim to the FJ due to the odd axle size (17mm if I remember correctly) and no standard bearings that will fit in the rim to adapt to another axle size.

Thanks for the tips. I think the forks may end up being the biggest challenge ($). I think I will hunt for the 87-88 FZR forks so that I can fit the bigger rotors.
All the forks that I have seen so far are complete with upper tubes. I would like to just purchase the lowers if I could, I will keep looking.
If I do get the complete FZR for set should I try to use my 86 FJ tubes and springs or just slide in the whole FZR set?
Does the board have a for sale or swap area, or does anyone have a good source for parts for the FJ conversion? I have pretty much been limiting my search to eBay so far. Any tips?

Don, you can use the whole fzr fork assembly from a 87-88 fzr1000. 41mm tubes. the 86 tubes are weaker than the fzr ones . You are gonna want to change the springs anyway as the fj ones are weak from the factory. check out the racetech website for proper spring rate for your weight. most go with the 1kg. and emulators.
tips for parts , sometimes someone on the group is upgrading or has bits and pieces for sale , watch for it.
use the search feature on ebay and it will e-mail you when it finds a match.
sometimes someone selling a part off a bike has other parts as well . it dosen't hurt to ask. :biggrin:

I still have the front end for the 1986. Will the 1986 front end fit the

Forgive me, but I gotta ask: Why on earth would you want a narrow pig heavy 16" front rim on the front end of your '89??
Is it for the anti-dive units that never worked, or the superior single puck brakes that felt like wood, or the 120/80-16 bias ply rubber?
