Title: FZR1000 rear wheel
Post by: Coronet on June 29, 2010, 11:53:22 AM
I just bought a 1994 FZR1000 rear wheel off e-bay and have a few questions about installing it on my 93 FJ. The wheel includes the brake rotor and the cush drive but I'm not sure it has the spacers (still waiting for it to get here).
I did a search for info on this swap and it seems fairly straight forward but I did not find much on adapting the ABS off the FJ wheel to the FZR1000 wheel.
I was looking on Ian Kings site and seen where Horst Blim was doing a mod on the FZR1000 wheel to make it work with the FJ's ASB but it did not get into what was actually involved in the process. any info on this would be appreciated.

Ok, I went and did more searching about this swap and it seems like there is an issue with wheel alignment/offset. I was going to use the info listed in the fjmods forms but now it appears this is not the correct way to do it. Can someone please give me the bottom line on this.
I plan on doing machine work myself as I have both a lathe and mill.
I would just like to be aimed in the right direction before I start.

Thanks
Mark H.

Mark - I have an 18" FZR rear wheel on my 92 with ABS. I haven't quite got round to it yet (two years later) but I did a set of drawings to mount the ABS rotor in a plate fitted in the centre of the disk rotor. The mounting plate would be machined from 6mm steel and drilled to lighten it as much as possible. The pick-up will then fit in a block mounted on the caliper arm and set up so the clearance can be adjusted.

Instructions for machining and spacer sizes are here... http://www.fjmods.btinternet.co.uk/Pictures/Genesis.jpg (http://www.fjmods.btinternet.co.uk/Pictures/Genesis.jpg) ... pretty straightforward.

I got my wheel from Harvy (Queensland mob) with spacers already sorted and just used my FJ brake rotor but it all matches the instructions on the FJmods site. I can probably find my concept sketches and might even get on with the job one of these wet winter weekends.

Ned......that's an '88 Genesis wheel...... I believe the '89-> is quite different.

Apart from falling out of trees, what's stopping the ABS mod mate (rubbing salt into old wounds )?

Bit on the wet and chilly side over there in NZ ........ never mind only 2 more months to springtime.

EXUP wheel is a 5.5x17.  The older models used the 4.5x18.

OP:  Sit down and measure it all, the way I read it was it was a cut to fit sort of thing, depends on how much abuse the arm has had and how bent it is (to a degree, obv).

I could help with getting the wheel in the swingarm, as I just did this mod on my '90.......But I would be no help with the ABS part.
I used a '94 FZR1000 wheel, but used all the rest of the FJ parts. (FJ cushdrive, spacers, caliper bracket, even bearings/seals)

Yep this wheel is 17 x 5.5. I had read somewhere on this forum to use a wheel off a 89-96 FZR and this wheel is off a 94.

Firehawk068 I would be interested in hearing about mods you did to install this wheel on your 90.

Does anyone know if the mods Ned did to retain the ABS on his bike using the 18" wheel will work with the 17" wheel I have?

Thanks for all the great Info.

Firehawk068 just read the post where you talked about using the FJ's spacers cushdrive and caliper bracket, Thanks.

Now I just need to figure out the ABS issue.

Yep Harvy is right, slightly different wheel - but my ABS mod should still apply to any wheel. There's no need to bury the ABS rotor in the wheel like the original. That would involve some serious machining of the wheel hub and likely mess up its structural integrity but cutting into the webs.
As for not getting on with it Harvy - well I can give lots of excuses but mainly that I am too busy with other things - does that sound reasonable or should FJ mods be top priority?
I'll find the sketches I did and post them - I won't require any royalties for my intellectual property... :sarcastic:

Ned, any luck posting the info on the ABS retrofit to the FZR wheel?

Thanks
Mark H.

PS - That dam bait is starting to go bad.   Hope I'm not being a pest.
