I have what seems to be a noisy speedo cable. It's still cold up here, but has anyone else run into this? Any recommendations on lube?
Thanks!!
Be surprised it the cable was whiny, more likely the drive at the wheel. However, to lube either a nice black moly grease works well.
Replacing the speedo cable is surprisingly INexpensive.
Cheers,
Arnie
I have the same problem on occasion with my '85. It'll usually stop when I hit a bump or smack the gauge cluster. When I replace my fairing, I'll replace the cable as well. I want to say a new cable is less than $20.
..last time I got one it was less than $6
I just pulled my gauge cluster apart in order to address the same problem. My cable is in good shape...so...I am trying to determine exactly where to apply the grease at the drive gears. I am thinking that grease in the wrong place could just make a mess of all the odometer/speedo parts. Does anybody have some advice for which locations should be lubed at the drive gears?
THank you!
Tony
The noise may be comming from the speedometer drive located on the front wheel. Remove the front wheel then clean the drive out and regrease it with a little black moly grease. It might just eliminate the noise.... HTH
