Kenneth,
You did not mention your experience level on two wheels. The FJ1100 is a BEAST. It is fairly nice under 4000 RPM, yes, but from there to the redline, this bike becomes a fire-breathing dragon. Even well-experienced riders may want to have a lot of straight road in front of the bike, before exploring the performance above 4000 RPM.

As for riding with small children, I would suggest helmets and gloves for them as a minimum protection, and never have two of them with you on the bike. Your call, of course, but no small child is ever going to be ready for the power available with your bike.

The FJ100 has few equals, in performance. If the bike seems top-heavy before you get moving, it's legal to have half a tank of fuel or less in the tank, until you get a handle on the weight. Never park where you will need to go backwards out of the spot. Park only where you can leave by going forward, for now.
Best Wishes.
All "In My Opinion" here, of course.
My US$ 0.02 worth . . .
