Title: 1984 FJ. Is it worth anything?
Post by: MadMatt on January 02, 2026, 11:12:43 AM
Hello all,
I have a 1984 FJ w/64K miles that has been parked in my garage for the last 13 years. My last ride ended with serious blue smoke exhaust. Parked it and didnt have $$ to fix it. Still has 95% good body parts. Is it worth anything?

Mad Matt,
Like anything else, it is worth whatever somebody will pay you  for it. If you can scare up a good used engine, a buyer may take it all as an engine-swap project. If the used engine is low-cost, you might do the engine swap yourself and just keep that bike. Chances are, most of your old engine is still good, and it never hurts to have a complete engine worth of spare parts in the corner. I have a 1985 FJ1100 (identical, near enough) and it still does very well by me on the road.
Alternately, you might line up buyers for your parts and pieces, and if the money total gets right by you, then just part it out. I would also ask some independent bike shops how much they want to do an engine swap (you supply the good used engine) to avoid getting your hands dirty.

These bikes are great and hard to find if you have any interest to keep it for the longterm you could refresh it and get many more years out of it.

At 64k miles I'm sure the top end needs to get redone at minimum.

My guess is if you posted it for sale as is you might get $500 to $1500 for it depending on condition and how long you are willing to wait to get top dollar.

Parting it out may get you $1000 to $2000 but then you have to disassemble take photos make posts and ship etc.

If you were to rebuild it, it depends if you are doing the work yourself or not but for a general refresh of the top end with brake lines, caliper rebuilds, tires and other normal stuff to get it road worthy I'd guess you'd spend about $2500 to 3500 on parts.

But don't take my word as gold decide what you want and do your homework.

Non running you are going to get less than $1k if all the body work is there.
If you left gas in the tank and the tank is rusted out, maybe $500.

I hope you get that bike to someone who wants to ride it.

Mad Matt,
Just wanted to add, if you ship anything big, terminal-to-terminal truck shipping can be a real deal. The customer delivers the box to the right terminal, and the recipient picks it up from the receiving terminal. Insurance is often included in the deal.
Some terminals offer door-to-door service, so ask if they will do that. Price depends on how fast you want it delivered. If they have a truck going that way next Tuesday, the cost will be low, and maybe by a lot.  If they never (usually) go there, they may take the job but it will cost a lot.
There are no set prices for the same shipping job, so prices will vary wildly between carriers, depending on where the trucks were going anyway. Shop around; next week, some prices for shipping will go lower or higher, even at the same companies.
