Title: High compression pistons
Post by: crazy88 on November 07, 2025, 07:17:58 PM
So I have a set of weisco 12:1 pistons. I pretty much know the answer but just gonna ask anyways. Can the stock rods handle that high of compression? If not the stock ones, how about the xjr1250 rods that RPM has listed. Also from what I understand, with raising compression I should consider a programmable CDI to retard ignition timing. Is dyna2000 the only option (if not a recommendation would be greatly appreciated) and are they any good. Because I've seen very mixed reviews regarding them. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Crazy88,

I would sell off those pistons, personally. The FJ is aged, and extra horsepower now could put too much stress on the old power train components. High compression requires high octane fuel, and if you are avoiding ethanol now, you might have to buy Avgas from the airports or the hotrod crew, which will probably include lead additives. The carbs may need new jets. For your fine FJ, I would simply say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." YMMV.

Yea I'm kinda leaning that way tbh. I kinda bought them hastily off eBay cuz I thought they were a good price but didn't really do the research before hand. I've gone way over budget with my rebuild and I am probably gonna have to sink $500 on new valves yet. So I might just forgo the weiscos. Idk if I would be able to sell the pistons again because I already gapped the rings to my cylinders. That being the case would I possibly be able to use the weisco 77mm rings on the stock pistons?

Crazy88,
Don't know about the ring thing. Can you get new rings from Weisco, for the resale?
As for valves, it seems like you can get a good used head, complete, for less money.  I would expect to lap in a few valves, maybe all, but still come out with less expense. You would probably need some new shims, though. RPM may have some help for you, for a good cylinder head.  They know people in the game.

I agree that's probably the most cost effective route. I found an 1100 head on eBay that looks in great shape for just under $300. Probably gonna go that way. Thanks for the input brother.

I agree with Red, sell those 12-1  Wiseco's.

On buying a used head I would plan on *at least* surfacing the gasket surface, installing new Viton valve seals and assuming the valves and seats are healthy, lapping the valves.

Beware on used FJ heads.
It's common to have leaky exhaust valves and/or valve seats due to tight valves from deferred maintenance.
If the head was overheated you may also need to line bore the cam journals.

Yeeeea. Already have the valve seals cuz that was the whole reason I started the re build. Every single one was leaking a ton. And one of cylinder 3 valves wasn't sealing anymore. Now none of my valves are sealing except the exhaust ones on cyl 3....I believe I over lapped them. But yes that is my main concern in buying a used head, that the valves are gonna be fucked anyways. And the fact that I already had a hell of a time surfacing the original head , I really don't wanna mess with all that again. Might be my only choice tho lol.
