Title: Suspension recommendations
Post by: Jpn on October 02, 2025, 09:47:53 PM
Bought my 85 FJ1100 this spring and gradually going through the bike to bring everything up to my standard. Suspension will be next, looking for recommendations on fork springs, (valves?) oil etc and what if anything should be done with the rear mono shock. Currently there's no leaks and the suspension seems to function the way it's supposed to. Albeit a bit stiff (is that normal?) even though it's been set to specs in the manual. The metering adjustment on the left front fork seems a bit wonky and I want to address that as well over this winter. Any aftermarket or stock suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What's your budget?

Well, up to 2k I'd say. Maybe more depending on how refined the handling becomes. I'm not a knee dragging rider but I plan to keep my fj many years. I put 2k miles on it over this summer along with a lot of tlc.

$2k is reasonable
I would do a Hagon or YSS shock (length adjustable) RPM fork valves and springs with '89 to '95 FJ forks, then replace those narrow pig heavy 16" rims with 17's ('87/88 FZR front and YZF600 rear) and run modern 17" radial tires. Some eBay R-1 front calipers and a used FZ-1 14mm m/c with braided lines would be the icing on the cake.

To me a suspension system is more than just springs and shock...it's also the tires and brakes.
