Fellow two wheeled enthusiasts,
Putting together the bits and bobs for the YZF750 conversion. I have a very clean set of forks, lower triple, wheels, axle and fender. Time to obtain an upper triple clamp and modify to suit What are my options? If I had done this a couple years ago I would have bought the LSL conversion. It looks like I can use a YZF1000 Ace and follow the Mark Rittner formula (bore to 50mm, shorten switch mounts etc.), I saw something about using a 92-95 FZR1000 part. Is it a flat (non-batwing) triple with 50mm bores?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Daniel
Anyone?
On my YZF750 forks, LSL made a replacement top triple clamp for the YZF750 that was for the handlebar conversion, that's what I used along with the FZ-1 bars.
Pat, unfortunately the LSL kit is NLA. I even reached out to LSL Germany. I saw a post where someone talked out using the FZR1000 (95ish) part, I was wondering if it was a direct swap. Obviously I would have to add the risers to use the FZ1 bar. The Ace part is available and I have access to a Bridgeport and a boring head, so I can go that route. Using the mill comes with baggage I don't need. If there was a bolt in part it would be ideal.
Thanks,
The simple answer is to use the YZF top yoke/clamp and just drill two holes in it so that you can bolt a set of 2001-2005 FZ1 risers to it.
No need to buy an expensive kit, or go boring out the fork holes.
Just this afternoon I helped another owner (one of the friends from our recent Europe tour) fit a 1992 FZR 1000 RU front end into his 89 3CV FJ. We cut down the mounting legs for the ignition switch and cut the bottom half of the loop around the switch. On the top yoke and it all dropped on perfectly, with the steering lock fully operational. We'll make up the little lock-stop bracket tomorrow.
Dean,
The issue is using the YZF750 upper triple clamp is it is a batwing design. The area where you would mount the FZ1 clamps is sloped, not flat. The LSL kit was flat and came with the risers. It looks like ABM makes/made a kit similar to the LSL piece. There is one on eBay right now that I am looking at. What I was wondering is does the FZR1000 piece work? Is the bore for the fork sliders 50mm?

This is what I am looking at.
Or directly from ABM Approx $255.00 USD

The ABM looks good. What will be your plan for the ignition switch?
:unknown:
That's phase 2 of figuring this out. The ABM kit should be by design the same as the LSL in that regard. Able to take the factory YZF750 switch. How did you handle it?
The LSL top triple had the ignition switch offset to the left. I had to shim the barrel of the lock to fit in the larger diameter hole on the top triple.
Of course, with the offset, I don't have a fork lock anymore...no big deal.
I'll try and snap some pictures.
Here ya go:

Pat,
To be honest I can't even tell what you did. Looks like a 100% factory install. :hi: Did you have to modify the mounting lugs on the underside? Or did the switch mount up at the correct height? I have never once used my lock, so no loss there.
Daniel
Thanks Daniel...
I think that's the best compliment...a finished mod that looks oem.
I didn't need to modify the lower mount on the ignition switch. You see how the top of the switch barrel pokes thru the LSL mount ring? So the barrel length is not critical...it ends up where it ends up...no need to mess the lower mount.

Did anyone used Apex Risers instead?

Yep very adjustable. Used them on my 1350r.
More pics
Sorry same as first. They have replacement parts should you go down. (Well thay used to. Been awhile since I got them)
I also hand made some. Just cut everything off of the clamp of the gixxer clippons. And fabricated a set matching the stock fj clippons.
I actually hand fabricated 2 sets. The second set. I tried to use thinner aluminum stock.(to make them slightly lighter:) Came down from a wheelie a little too hard. And they slightly bent. So decided not to use them anymore. And went with the apex. Still running the original hand made ones on my 89.
Does anyone know if the 93 yzf750sp front wheel is compatible with the fj. I have one brand new in the box. A guy from work nocked my bike off the kickstand. When he rolled his BMW off it's center stand. His insurance replaced everything that got scratched. (After checking it out. 1 of 2 93 yzf750sp's registered for the street in the US:) the original just had a small scratch on the rim. So I never replaced it. If it'll fit one of my fjs I'll have to find it and dig it out.
Dan, I'm sure the axle on the yzf750 wheel is at least a 17mm or maybe a 18, 19 or 20mm
You might get special bearings to fit the 750 rim with an ID that reduces it down to the FJ's axle size of 15mm.
If the bearings ID on the 750 rim is 17mm you do have enough meat on the FJ fork lowers to drill out the FJ axle holes from 15mm to 17mm....no such luck with the larger 18,19, or 20mm axles.
I checked our axle table in the Files but didn't see a listing for the 1993 YZF750 R
https://fjowners.com/index.php?topic=15169.0
The 1994-1997 YZF750 R shows to be a 20mm front axle.
Cheers
Pat
