Title: New good deed goes unpunished
Post by: captaudi on July 08, 2025, 04:16:17 PM
Howdy,

In the act of rebuilding my clutch hydraulics yesterday, I spilled a little brake fluid on the black trim inside the fairing. I stupidly wiped it off with a little brake clean. Now I have this wonderful patch of milky grey. I tried some Mothers trim restorer, no bueno. Anyone have any luck with another product to bring back the gloss black?

Cheers.

The plastic is ABS, Might be able to polish it.

The few I know who have suffered similar mishaps have eventually, sadly, resorted to painting the panels.

Maybe try a film wrap. Carbon fiber, Black, your choice.

I just declared it patina and moved on.

same thing happened to me few weeks ago, if I ever take them off for any reason I'll probably just spray paint them or use black 3M vinyl wrap.

Wrapping is a good idea, not sure how I would handle the vents down towards the bottom. If it was all flat it would be cake. I think I will probably put them this winter scuff them and paint them . They were already starting to look a little worn after 32 years. A little tune up won't hurt. Jeez nothing lasts these days  :ireful:

Yep, exactly what I do, I love Patina..

I've used Bowden's Own Mr Black Trim Restorer on vehicle bumpers, but it doesn't last forever.

1500 or 2000 grit sand then apply this:

Currently the black shows out of stock but will return.

This ^^^ is not a top dressing. I lived in the desert and I have used this product on sun bleached plastic.
The finish is not a glossy black but more of a flat or flat/satin black.

I have converted my '84 over to DOT 5 just for this reason.... I've had my share of grief with DOT 3/4.
My '89 still has DOT 3/4 and I have a habit, I never open the masters without towels draped over my tank and windscreen, and a spray bottle of water within reach.

The good news: the black plastic trim can be restored, however if you get brake fluid on your acrylic windscreen, you're screwed. Don't ask....

Cheers.  Pat

Thanks Pat, and yes I got the windscreen years ago. If you reverse fill the clutch, leave the top on the master otherwise a perfect stream will hit the windscreen It makes me twitch every time I ride the bike. I have a new one enroute from MRA in Germany as well speak. Although I really wish I could find a NOS factory one. What I would really love is to find a 93 decal set. I am getting close to wanting to repaint the bike.
