Title: 86 Simple Retoration, not so simple?
Post by: FJTate on June 10, 2025, 01:33:16 PM
Good afternoon everyone,
I am new to the forum, still figuring things out. I had an earlier topic about an oil leak on my 86 1200.
I have removed the filter, the "hydraulic unit," or so the manual calls it, and the case revealing the sproket, and what appears to be a blown shaft seal for the unit. It is pouring oil out of it. Does anyone know what this seal is called? and where I can find it? I will try to post a picture in just a moment, Thank you in advance for your time and expertise!
Cheers.

Shaft Seal is in between the sprocket and the oil filter housing.

Is this area you are referring to that you say you see oil leaking out of?

That's the rod for your clutch, if oil is coming out of there it's engine oil. So when oil filter was on and the clutch slave was on you saw oil coming out from that are?

Don't start the bike without the clutch slave installed the oil pressure will push that rod out

Thanks for the info! Do you know how I replace that seal that the shaft rides on?

Pull the rod out, then the seal can be pry'ed out with a flat blade screwdriver.
 It comes out easy.

Update:
It's called a clutch push rod oil seal, they have them on eBay for around $10 OEM. Thanks everyone for the help, will update when it arrives and I get it on the road. You guys are the best. Cheers!
