Title: Need picture of R1 Front Master Cylinder Reservoir Mount
Post by: 86FJNJ on May 23, 2025, 06:55:56 PM
Putting R1 front brakes on my FJ. Calipers are on and work fine with the stock front master cylinder but I ordered a 2003 R1 front master on ebay but I can't figure out how to mount the reservoir and mount it so that it doesn't hit my wind screen and fairing. Hoping somebody can snap a few photos of their setup please.

The relevant page on my thread is here:

It's just got one picture:

I don't remember any issues here.

Is it due to the shape of the 1TX fairing and non adjustable handlebars?
Maybe a different top yoke and some Renthal handlebars or similar might work.
A top yoke from a XJ-6 post Diversion allows the use of different handlebars but only one bolt can be used to mount the ignition switch. IDK, JAT.

Here's my 3CV with an XJR front brake m/c and FJR clutch m/c. I think the XJR and R1 brake m/c are the same.

Where there is a will there is a way! I took a Home Depot joist bracket and made my own bracket. There there are some spacers between the inside of the bracket and the face of the master cylinder bracket. Seem to be fine. I'll eventually take it off and paint it so it doesn't turn into rust.

So my front brakes feel good but not GREAT. I got two used R1 calipers from eBay. I think the front left caliper is not as good as the front right caliper. I pumped and blead each one individually and they both work but the right caliper worked really well while the left caliper would have needed a bit more bleeding to get better.

Other than a caliper rebuild is there any other tricks to try? The bike stops but Id like it to stop a bit better, although the last bike I was used to was a late model GSXR750 so maybe it's not a fair comparison since that bike weighed 375 lbs and this FJ is a lot closer to the 7640 lbs my Harley weighed.

My brakes are FZ1, not R1. Sorry about that. But they are awesome.

With the used calipers - did you put in NEW pads?  Did you thoroughly clean the calipers - polish the slide pins and get the pistons all nice and shiny?  And a little (very little!) lube on the slide pins and the pistons?

Fj1289 I did not, I wanted to see how they would be but I think I need to do what you say. I never did that before so I need to get a rebuild kit or can it pull the pistons out without needing a rebuild kit?

I would just clean the portion of the pistons you can see with brake cleaner and a tooth brush.  Basically you don't want to shove a dirty piston back through the seal.

Definitely use new pads - you have no idea if the old pads are contaminated, glazed etc.  a new set of EBC HH pads should help!

Thanks for the advice FJ1289 will do. Also does anyone have a good source for caliper bolts that are pre-drilled for safety wiring? I didn't see them on RPM site.

Just Ti ones that I know of - NOT really worth it unless you just want the bling!

Did you drill and tap into the inside of your bar end?

Yes, did exact same thing on both sides.
Clutch master cylinder adapted from 95 YZF 750R to match reservoirs.
