Hi. I've changed the filter along with the o rings but I'm getting loads of oil pouring out from between the bolt and the housing
You have a leaking o ring (see #7)
https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/motorcycle/1990/fj1200a/oil-filter
Also it's very common to pinch the neutral switch wire between the oil filter housing and block, watch for that...
Finally, be sure you have the spring washer #9 for proper sealing of the filter.
Cheers
Pat
I just changed my oil yesterday. First time since going to this:

I'll never go back to the stock FJ filter setup. This spin on adapter from RPM is a lot better.
+1 for the spin-on oil filter adapter. Great stuff!
The stock oil filter mess is a royal PITA. I'd never go back.
WIX makes good spin-on filters. They have anti-drainback flapper valves,
so the oil filter remains full when the engine is not running.
One other note on the stock filter. When I brought my FJ back to life after sitting for 16 or so years, I bought a new filter. The new O-ring was much thicker and I was having a hard time with the installation. Ended up reusing the old one and it was fine. This was for an aftermarket filter, Fram I think, and now made in china.
Hi.
You probably overtihten the bolt and cracked the housing.
This is aluminum housing.
Usually, this is the reason.

I did the same. Get the spin on filter conversion from rpm worth every penny
+1 on rpm spin on. It saved me on a trip around lake Michigan. I had a stuck valve in one of my carbs. That I didn't know about when we shut down at the motel in the UP. Got up to a full crankcase and a puddle of gas under my bike. Motel grounds keeper let me use his oil drain pan. And I took one of the other bikes into town got a filter and oil from the local Napa. And changed it in the motel parking lot. Knocked on the side of the carb. And rode the rest of the trip without a problem. Have them on 3 of my fjs now will have them on all 7 of them when I get them done.
The spin on filter adapter is the best thing since sliced bread. With the old setup one time I changed the oil, installed new filter, fiddled around assembling it, started up and saw oil pouring out, I had the neutral wire caught during assembly, so had to pull apart and did it again. It's a bad design.
The spin on adapter once fitted is a piece of cake, spin old filter off, oil the o ring and spin the new one on and done, plus they look factory with a small black filter installed.
Does anyone know what size that O-ring is for under the original oil filter housing is , number 8, also size of number 7 for the bolt ?
