I had an extra sprocket cover so sanded it down to metal, two coats self etching primer, three coats VHT heat resistant black and 1 coat VHT heat resistant clear. Inner plate and backing rubber were removed before painting so finish is all around.
Finish is pretty good IMO if your current cover has chipping paint but it's not perfect, if you're looking for Barrett Jackson quality.
Not sure what a fair price is I have it on eBay for $100 expecting some lower offers but willing to take significantly lower from anyone in this group via PayPal or Zelle.
I've painted my motorcycle handlebars a like this years ago and they help up perfect for a handful of years until I sold the bike so I don't think you'll have to worry about this finish chipping or anything.
