I picked up a couple used XJ valve covers that were used on a Legend car. I figured if I can't use them I can resell them.
My bike is an 86, I know they should fit but I would have to change the bolts and bolt seals to the XJ style. My question is, is there any advantage to switching to the XJ style?
I see the bolt seals for the XJ version or more costly than the stock set up but if there is any advantage to switching to the XJ I'll do it. Does the XJ version prevent or reduce the potential to strip the valve cover bolts from over tightening which I've heard is an issue with the stock set up?
No, there is no advantage.
No, both the FJ and XJ valve cover bolts are shouldered and will bottom out. If you keep tightening the bolt will break or you will strip threads.
Looks is the only difference.
Thank you, looks like I may be posting two XJ valve covers for sale soon haha What are they worth? They look to be in great condition
Worth whatever someone is willing to pay for them. We have two green totes full of used ones and half a dozen brand new. The race cars guys tend to bend them so you need to make sure they are still straight and won't leak. The master cylinder has to be loosened up on the race car to get them off (the 1200 covers you did not have to) and guys would just try and pry them out of there and bend them.
Found this out the hard way. I tried to save a customer a few bucks and put a used one on as his original got damaged from a previous owner. Put it all together, went for a test ride came back dowsed in oil. Pulled the tank, put a another new gasket on it, still leaking. Changed the cover out for a new one and it stopped. I put the cover on large flat mirror and it was rocking around and bent.
great to know thanks!
I do like the black
