Title: 1st time owner
Post by: JohnnyTheCraneGuy on December 22, 2024, 01:47:58 AM
Hey all! I just picked up an 84 1100 and figured I would introduce myself on here and hopefully meet some new people. I already know with her being as young as she is I'm going to have too run through more than a few things too feel comfortable treating her the way she deserves! So you'll probably see me in the maintenance forums mostly asking yall for directions lol.

Welcome!  Couple of us in Colorado too - I'm south of Denver in Franktown.  Alan - also from Colorado - should be around shortly to introduce himself too.

Wasn't sure where to post this or if whether or not I should start a new topic haha.

Anyways, here's my new to me 86 1200.

Which I scored for 600 doll hairs.

Now I don't know if I'm crazy for this or not but, I really want to put my Stormy Red fairings on the and tank on the 1200 and have the 1100 frame sit while I save up for the 1250 drop in.

I don't think you are crazy.  I prefer the looks of the 1100... I never cared for the 1200's front signals.  That's just me.

I agree, the 84/85 fairings look sleek with the smaller side scoops and without the turn signals.

Well I got around to getting an idea of what kind of condition the motor might be in. Battery was shot so I just grabbed the one out of the 1100. Pulled the 1200 carbs off and those are gummed to all hell so on the shelf for now they go.

Turns out I got flat bottomed slides as opposed to the curved ones. I went ahead and ordered a full rebuild kit for the 86 and picked up the curved slides as well and I'm just going to swap what I need to on the 1100's to get it ready for the 12, i.e. jets, emulsion tubes, and a fresh oring kit as the 11 already has the allen head swap. I may continue to run the flat bottoms if the diaphragms are still good just to keep the snap in the throttle. I also went ahead and picked up some 115s for the mains, and the adjustable needles with the shim kit as well.

I went ahead and threw the 11's carbs on the motor with no cables or tank attached. I pushed in the choke shaft and pushed the started button and she fired up instantly! Confirmed idle and gave her a little revs and she responds.
I was very satisfied that I had enough battery and fuel in the bowls to get her running haha.

I was talking with Robert on what might be the best way to approach getting things swapped over and what I will probably end up doing is swapping motors and lower subframes, which Robert said they do by lifting the upper frame out.

I'm planning to drop the rear wheel with chain, remove the tail sub frame, and maybe keep the tree and forks on the frame to save putting that together again.

We shall see though, maybe after all this is done I'll treat myself to a nice jelly donut  :good2:

Is there a story on the tail cowl?

Hi Steve.  If you were referring to my red and white FJ, I was a huge Eddie Lawson fan and wanted to paint my '84 FJ with his '84 Marlboro Yamaha paint scheme.  To make that work, I really needed a seat cowl and the only one I found was a Gimbel on ebay.  https://www.ebay.com/itm/274345488368  It looks a little big, but it serves it's purpose.  With the right paint scheme, it could blend in much better.

Does anyone know if when swapping over to those adjustable needles was there no longer any play between the needle, spring behind it, and the plate that holds it down? Stock needles I can press down on them and on the adjustable ones I can no longer do that. Just curious to know other peoples experience.

That was the case with my DynoJet needles.  It's all good.

Rattling needles causes wear on your soft brass emulsion tubes (aka needle jets)

Check the bottom openings for elongation

Thank yall for the help! So I finally got everything swapped over and buttoned up.

My issue last night ended up being that on the plastic retainer that goes on the needle, there is a nub that protrudes down and goes into a hole on the slide, didnt have that lined up properly lol.

Also turns out that the PO had swapped in 117's so I'll save the 115's for when I fix the case on the 1100 I guess. Swapped emulsion tubes as well, and  pilots were the same.

I Rode around for a little over an hour and mid to upper range is responsive and no issues bogging under load.

Although after warming up I did notice that at lights the idle seemed a bit more sloppy. Got home and put it in neutral and it began to backfire at idle, also began to blue on the headers as well.

I didnt adjust my PMS screws yet so I'll probably turn them out a 1/4 turn each to if that'll alleviate that issue.

BUT I DID IT THOUGH

Wanted to post an update,

I honestly wasn't expecting it to warm up this quickly so I ended up using 10w30 again. I've put about 50 miles on the bike so far and I've got the carbs dialed in now minus a slight adjustment I need to make to the idle screw. (also why the hell is it on the bottom??)

I'm going to go ahead and flush it out anyways just to get all the crud out since it sat for who knows how long. I'll definitely throw some heavier weight in.

My concern now is that when I'm in the higher rpms at WOT and I let off, due to the higher vacuum I've noticed that smoke will blow out for about 3 seconds before clearing up. My guess is valve guide oil seals?

I of course checked oil level when I got back and she's still topped off right below the mark so it hasn't been happening without me noticing since the swap.

I'll probably ride her one more time and try too replicate it and then pull the plugs to see if they're fouling before I flush the oil. Maybe do a leak down test if it becomes more persistent.

Has anyone else had this issue, and is this a big concern? I've heard mixed opinions but I would like to hear from yall personally.

Remind me, what were your warm compression numbers?

Oil smoke on start up would be your valve guide seals.
Oil smoke on high rpm deceleration would be your oil rings.
A compression test would verify ring health.

At this stage I wouldn't worry about some smoke, as long as it's not excessive.
 Ride your bike.
Put a couple thousand miles on the engine to let things loosen up and reseal, then see what you have.

Johnny,

Try one can of Yamaha's Ring Free fuel additive, mixed to the label specs.  Yamaha makes it for their outboard motors, but I hear good reports in the bike engines, as well.  Can't recommend trying anything else.

Extremely well done IMO, I like it

I've never seen another FJ1100 done up in Marlboro colours other than my own which a used as a courier bike in London in the 1990's. I was the 14th owner of the bike and all pictures of it are now lost though i'm still using the original crankshaft of 140,000 plus miles in my XJR1200.

I had an '85 RZ350 that I did in the same paint scheme.  It had a Telefix full fairing and solo seat.  Looked great but alas, it was stolen from me.
