Title: Boone 2025
Post by: Motofun on September 29, 2024, 09:19:39 AM
I don't know how to get the word out besides putting it here....but Boone got absolutely hammered by hurricane Helene.  Some areas got 30 inches of rain!  Not sure exactly what Boone got but the pictures show Macadoo with water so the street must have been flooded pretty deep.  I e-mailed the KOA with concerns about their impact and hopes for their safety.  Pictures of the surrounding area show rather massive road destruction in areas like Banner Elk and other frequent riding roads that we take.  We have some folks in the areas affected by Helene here's hoping they got through it OK.

Just received a reply from Kristina at the Boone KOA.  They apparently got through with minor damage.  They have power but no water.  The area however is devistated with homes just gone, either exploded, burnt or washed away.  Many roads are impassable and some folks are just stuck where they are.  Any help you can give, Red Cross or other way I'm sure will be appreciated.

It won't be the same this year without Garry.  Gary Horton passed on Christmas day

Need to bring some 'shine to the campfire and raise a toast in his memory.  You know we got away with a fair amount of shenanigans cause Gary gave us a pass.  Remember when we were shooting potatoes at Joann's house and Gary got the assignment?

Miss JoAnn let us get away with a lot of stuff in the early years because we were her only customers.  We've evolved a little

Just a note to suggest or confirm the dates for the Boone rally in May.  It's either the weekend of 17/18 or 24/25.  It looks like the second option would run over Memorial day weekend on the 26th.

My reservation for the KOA is the weekend of the 17&18

Hello all.
I'm gonna try to make the spring rally this year.
Does anyone have a cabin booked they'd want to share?
Cheers.

Have not heard any input about firewood this time around????  Should we?

It looks like Mr. Eddie might be our only choice.  I've called several sawmills in the area.  Most don't sell slab wood, but I'm awaiting for one to return my call.

I called several firewood providers.  One will sell a cord of wood for $250, plus $65 delivery.  I'm awaiting a return call from another.  Firewood may cost more, but burn longer.

I think we wait a couple of days before deciding.  Worst case, we sit around my propane fire ring

Mr Eddie was also $300 if I remember.  Don't know how many are actually planning on going this year.  If only 5 of us show up (my current count)......

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it down this year now, with the exchange rate what it is and possibility of a strike with work. My 2 weeks vaycay will now be spent cleaning the garage out.
Everyone be safe, and have a great time!

Welp, I just made kabin reservations for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Looking forward to it.

My wife and I actually went through there a month ago, we took the car and stayed in an AirBnB east of town off 221. It was pretty, as usual, and it was a nice trip further north.

Just me on this trip, my wife will stay here and visit with my stepson who is flying into town. He'll come to the house to visit a bit Friday, I'll catch him the following week. Maybe this fall I can talk her into riding on the back for three hours to come to Tellico, though. We'll see.

Meanwhile, it'll be good to get back up there and see you guys, whoever "you guys" is. Meanwhile, I will have to tinker a bit and replace a burned out bulb on the FJ, and see if I can zip that jacket up over my gut.

Looks like we'll postpone a decision on firewood until folks get there.  Another tradition bites the dust??? :sarcastic:

Looks like Nancy and I won't make it to Boone this year, sometimes things just happen.      Have fun and keep the faith.

For those that will make it to Boone, I've prepared a pan of lasagna for a group meal.

Jack, I'm sorry you guys can't make it. Hopefully it's something good that came up suddenly, and not something that's a drag. Hope to catch you guys this fall.

Fun time, nice weather (during non-sleeping hours - but we got a heck of a thunderstorm Friday night, including enough wind to relocate Dean's EZ-Up.

Great to see everyone who made it this time.

Off to unpack.
