Title: Hardbags and exhaust
Post by: captaudi on September 21, 2024, 02:19:09 PM
Happy Saturday everyone.

As our wonderful steeds have gracefully aged, the aftermarket support has fallen by the wayside. I am trying to fit a complete Krauser K2 setup to my 93. I have the factory fitting kit, the "hockey sticks" and the twin 30L bags. The problem I have is no matter how I adjust the hardware, I can not get clearance to the exhaust that makes me happy. I am running a Vance and Hines SS2R, I no longer have the factory system. It looks like today there are 2 possible options. Delkavic and the RPM system. I don't really care for the look of the Delkavic system and it looks like the RPM system is out of stock. And I am not sure the RPM system would give that much more clearance.

I may be changing jobs this year requiring a 40 mile commute and it would be really nice to be able to put all of my daily "stuff" in hard bags. As well as shoving leathers and the like in them during work.

If people have pictures of the r/s of the bike with hard bags and clearance to exhaust it would be awesome. My other option is to fab a new center exhaust section and tilt the rear of muffler down a bunch. The Vance and Hines uses 2-1/8 tubing, which I found a source for in 304SS as well as mandrel bends. I have access to some of the best tig welders in the business. (I work at Bath Iron Works where we build destroyers).

I would really be interested to see a set of modern Hepco Beckers mounted with an aftermarket exhaust.

Thanks for any and all input.

By the way, here is the most clearance I can get.

I have the Hepco & Becker bags and dual slip-ons.
My exhaust is a mixed brand of parts.
OEM head pipes, Black Widow XJR collector and Dominator mufflers. Basically a 4-2 open exhaust system. Dominator offers a few different muffler styles.

Here is a video of how the system sounds.

Fred,

First of all it looks great, sounds even better! Looks like clearance is more than adequate.

Do you know what the restriction is in the factory exhaust? Is it the collector or the mufflers? I believe I still have the factory head pipes and collector. They would only have about 20k on them. What did you do for jetting for your system? I installed Hank Scott's stage 1? about 15 years ago when I mounted the V&H, the bike could not run any better and I would rather not have to mess with the jetting.

Looks like you have the twin 30L bags, does a full face fit? Being able to throw the lid in the sidecase is a serious want. I would prefer to keep it balanced rather than the 30/40 combo.

Thanks for the input.
