I'm the new partner to a 1990 FJ1200. A bit about how the events unfolded; I was window shopping on Craigslist since it's been about a year since I last rode, my previous bike was a '17 Harley Iron 1200 in a really sweet Golden Olive Green color, before that one I was riding a '05 Triumph Speed Triple.
Anyway, I saw the FJ in good running shape, second owner, was owned by a sweet older gentleman who babied it, under 60k miles, all for under 1,500. I wasn't looking for anything in particular but at that price and in great running shape with zero problems I couldn't pass it up, before that I had never even heard about the FJ.
Anyway, it's been a few days and I've already put about 200 miles on her. The gentleman put a Super Trap 4 into 1 exhaust and man she sounds lovely on decelerations, I love all the pops and gurgles!
Long term plan is to make her more comfortable, a bit more touring capable, set her up to be my fishing companion, and use her to commute to work year round. I also plan on putting the big bore engine but I'm having a hard time finding a good write up/guide on the whole thing.

FWIW, I'd hold off on the big bore mod for a bit. Keep the RPM under 5000 for a while, and get used to the bike generally. When you do decide to go beyond that magic number on the tach, have a good solid grip and a lot of open road ahead of you. This bike can easily outrun its' brakes and tires.
Once you get a handle on what the bike can do, you may decide on making comfort and convenience mods for a while.

Welcome FJ, yep follow Red's advice. Get her running, then upgrade the brakes, tires and suspension....the last mod would be the engine.

You know I guess that is the way I kinda did it. I updated the brakes suspension and tires all at once. Gsxr inverted front end gsxr rear wheel an brake.Then the bigbore. Latest bike. Brakes tires suspension. Again gsxr inveted, rear wheel. And turbo. Then 1480 big bore with the turbo After I get bored with the turbo... Welcome to the insanity. Moditis runs rampant here.
Now if I can just stop modding my house. And get back to the fun stuff :wacko2:

In 3 weeks, put the tools down, load the bike up and come join me for the Vintage Yamaha Rally. I will have the Streetfighter there in running and rideable condition.

Hey Fred still getting used to the new schedule at work. But I got the last week end in September approved as my holidays for next year. So will be there. Next year. I work 3 day weekend. 3/12hr shifts get paid for 40hrs. So I get to set my holidays when I want them.
