Back in October of 2019 I paid $1500 for a 1989 Yamaha FJ1200 with 39,000+mi that was in great shape from a friend of mine in Cheyenne, WY who I believe is the original owner of this bike, and it came down from Alaska.
Well, let's fast forward a few years and about 5,000miles later it's been a few rough years as I haven't had the opportunity to ride as much as I'd like. Now though I am going to be changing that.
So Far I have plans to get my FJ spruced up and ready to rock for an adventure that's gonna take a lot of planning and parts.
So I'm gonna say this, I am an Adventure bike rider at heart as I've had a 09 Kawasaki KLR650, two 89 Suzuki DR500's, and rebuilding a 00 Honda CR250r, and been to Moab, been to the Big Horn mountain range in Northern WY and many off grid places in WY on two wheels.
That being said I want to go about building this bike like an adventure bike, aka: hefty crash bars, hard pannier bags, more upright sitting position if possible as I'm 6ft 5in.
I've done the YZF600r rear wheel upgrade and the blue spot brake caliper upgrade. And some Shinko 705 Trail Master Tires as I had almost 20mi of dirt roads I couldn't avoid going to work, and street specific tires are not fun on sandy roads.
I'm looking at the RPM crash bars for the engine side and looking at Happy Trails panniers for the back but not sure how I'm gonna end up mounting them as they are generally for adventure bikes.
I'm hoping that I can take some time off work towards the end of summer to go ride to AZ to see family & friends, then ride out to San Diago or LA and back to Wyoming via I-80.

You may want to convert to standard 7/8" (22mm) tubular handlebars to get a more upright riding position, especially for a tall rider. You can spend a lot or a little, for that hardware.

So I am looking for a CDI box for my FJ and the Box I have has "TID14-90 3SK-00" and 8Z29 stamped into the tin sticker and am wondering if any matching CDI will work in place of mine?
I found that the plastic case got damaged and likely had water get inside frying the internals as the bike runs fine for about 5min then spits and sputters till it just flat out dies. A friend told me for "Testing purposes only" you can tap the CDI with something hard and if it starts back up it's something internal and should be replaced.
Granted I may not be looking in the right place, but I am not finding a lot of info on the CDIs and figured I'd just ask.

I suggest you do the voltage regulator mod (Transpo) before you invest in the Dyna 2000. I have heard that the Dyna ignitions don't like the FJ's over voltage (15+) common with the oem VR's. Your light bulbs and AGM battery will thank you.
I have green 3.0 ohm Dyna coils on my '84 and along with the coil relay mod, they sure wake up the starting.

FYI Back in Sedona, safe and sound. It was a wet cold windy tour...we started too early. Oh well...
To make the FJ more off road compatible, I would highly recommend the Renntec crash bars. I know from experience that they hold up very well. Also... by all means... please remove the fairing and all associated hardware. You plan to take this off road.... inevitably you are going to drop it. No need to bust up a perfectly good fairing. You can easily graft a small fairing to the forward frame rail. Here is an example of my Streetfighter.
