Title: leaking side case
Post by: Rjack6811 on March 25, 2024, 04:09:30 PM
Im the new owner of an 1989 FJ and I have found an oil leak on this engine cover. It's just weeping a little when underway not when sitting idle. I saw the damage and the seller said it didn't leak, I took him for his word  :dash2: At any rate can this be fixed? what are the chances of finding a replacement?

Here is a new replacement.

You can TIG weld it.

Many have tried epoxy, but it doesn't expand with heat and pulls away from the base metal.

Thanks Randy, I will order the replacement cover and gasket. I notice the rubber centre gasket ring is out of stock, will I likely be able to reuse the existing one as well as the site level guage?

Yeah that typically happens if the bike falls over and the brake pedal punches through the clutch cover. That happened to me over 30 years ago and I patched it with JB weld which didn't leak until a couple of years ago when I had a slow speed front wheel washout when hitting gravel in a turn and punched a bigger hole. JB weld did the trick again but I had to remove the cover and do it in a couple of stages on a flat surface. Also had to clean out a couple of pieces of the broken cover inside the clutch. Still no oil leaking.
Good luck if you go that route. The hole on yours is so small that you can patch it without removing the cover. Just put it on the kickstand then sand around the crack then clean with acetone and apply JB weld. Use scotch tape to keep it from running and hold it flush. Let it cure then take it for a ride and if no leaking, sand ,prime and paint. Viola!
Worth a try since you don't have to drain the oil, remove the broken cover and replace with new one and gasket. Will save you time and money, and spend more time riding than wrenching :)
Should that not work for you, get a new one from RPM
Happy riding
