Title: What fluid to use for clutch?
Post by: Fj1100 Rebuild project on August 31, 2023, 12:47:09 AM
I purchased my 84 fj1100 without any of the hydraulic clutch parts (master cylinder, line, slave cylinder) anyway I have everything assembled and ready for fluid but I'm not sure if I need DOT3 DOT4 or DOT5. I have a master cylinder from a fjr1300, a slave cylinder from a fj1200 and the hydraulic line is from a fj1100. Any recommendations?

Dot 3/4 are basically they same chemically. Dot 5 is silicon based and would require the entire system to be flushed out as it is not compatible with 3/4. However it is not chemically relative to paint/plastics which is also nice because it doesn't eat parts.

And DOT 5.1 can be mixed with 3 and 4.

Not sure just detail oriented you are but DOT 3 is fine for the FJ hydraulic systems.  Unless you are a devil on the brakes you won't really challenge the temperature rating of DOT 3.  With multiple bikes and some used on the track I use an upgraded brake fluid but only cause I go through a lot of it and I don't want to buy and stock different types.
