Title: 1990 FJ Air Box Delete
Post by: Silent21 on August 13, 2023, 08:48:09 PM
Hello Everyone,

I have a 1990 FJ that has been in storage for years and I want to get it back on the road.  Currently, I am battling with getting the air box to get it reinstalled and I am thinking about just getting rid of it.  My bike is 99.9% stock, if I were to purchase the filter pods from RPM, are there any adjustments that have to be made to ensure that the bike runs well?

Thanks in advance for your help.

TJ

There's no need to battle to get the airbox back in, it goes in really easily.

Just loosen off the bottom front mounting bolts for the seat subframe, then loosen an remove the top mounting bolts. This will allow the subframe to pivot and drop backwards slightly, giving plenty of clearance to put the airbox back in place. Then just lift the subframe and put the bolts back in.

No need to go to all the hassle of pod filters and re-jetting.  :good2:

My guess is probably not.  You can always adjust the needle shim height though I forget if the stock needles are adjustable....The pods will increase the intake sound level a bit.  I always felt the totally stock FJ was very stealthy noise wise.

If you are not changing the exhaust you might not need to change much in the carbs. The stock exhaust is restrictive as well. The stock needles do not have grooves for adjusting but you can use a small washer for a shim.
