I am unsure as to what is the issues. Ive installed a new headlight with built in led flashers and a new gauge thats got all in one, speed, rmp, lights, fuel and all. But i was trying to get the binkers working and when i turned them on the lights when dark. I was checking wires with the lights on when the flasher started smoking i pulled it off and disconnect battery. But the flasher is a small 2 prong that is going off the 2 light brown wires from the larger relay. I suspect it could be a bad flasher or short somewhere. All i did was combine the 3 wires into 1 for the newer blinker which ive done before on other bikes with no problem. But i also have no idea about the reed switch. The new gauge doesnt have on so i planned on just taping of the old wires. But if it has no power in the reed will it kill the blinkers or when the switch clicks or what ever it does, does it then kill them? Can i just connect the wires and give it power to keep the blinkers on? Any help is much appreciated, electrical hasn't been my favorite.

In general, FJ's come with 2 types of analog flasher boxes, (analog = reed switch) one type that is connected to the odometer and is self canceling, the other type is the standard flasher, non self canceling.
Analog flashers with reed switches need a resistor on each LED when used with LED bulbs.
Aftermarket digital flasher boxes (no reed switch) used with LED bulbs do not need the resistors.
If you are using an aftermarket headlight product with integrated LED bulbs and no where to use the resistors, perhaps you need to remove the oem FJ analog flasher box and use an aftermarket digital flasher box?

Sorry its a 1984 Fj 1100 but the service book only has 1 diagram for all 1100 years. And i meant the to say the headlight has everything in one, blinkers and lights. And i found the reed switch im the odometer.
Ok, the 84's had self canceling flashers, more complicated than the basic system.
If you are using a headlight with built in led flashers you have 2 options
1) install resistors on the LED's (if you can) and use your FJ flasher box or
2) Ditch the FJ box and use an aftermarket solid state digital flasher relay

Alright so the flasher relay on the bike right now is i believe the oem one with more that 3 wires clipped on its got i think 8 wires.
So option 2 you say to remove that and install a 3 prong relay. But right now it has a 2 prong led relay attached to a brown and brown/white wire. So i should remove both and use 3 prong or take replace the 2 prong relay and use 3 prong?
The smaller 2 prong relay was what started smoking.
It feels like adding resistors would be easier and now i think about it there were some on some newer cheap blinkers but im just trying to understand. I just would think a newer led flasher relay wouldn't have issues with it, i could replace that but i was just wondering if it had something to do with the reed switch but i see thats not it. What would be the difference between 3 and 2 prong relay?
