Title: Battery replacement options
Post by: Waiex191 on November 07, 2022, 07:09:44 PM
Hey guys,
I searched and failed. My battery let me down at work today. I tried too long and then couldn't bump start it.

Looking for recommendations. Should I go for Lithium or just a stock battery?  Years ago I had overcharging issues and put a couple of diodes aimed in opposite directions. Knocked the charging voltage down 0.7 volts but lights are dim at idle. From what I think I've read lithium is happier at higher voltages.

Any advice, experience, or opinions are welcome.

I have a sealed AGM, middle ground between a simple lead acid and Li. I get 5 to 7 years with a tender on when parked.

Thanks, I've got one ordered.

Our OEM old school lead acid battery tolerated charging at 15+ volts (just add water)
Check the specs on the max charging voltage on your new AGM....does it say 14.6 volts max charging voltage?
If so, just be aware that your (unmodified) oem system can put out 15.2-15.4 volts and still be within acceptable spec.

Consider an aftermarket VR modification to limit your charging voltage to 14.4 volts....your battery and light bulbs will thank you.

I'm finally going to have to replace the shorai battery I installed in 2012. Plus I had accidentally ran it flat after I first got it. Didn't realize I had turned the key to park. Leaving marker lights on. Wasn't ever the same after that. But still way better than any other battery I've ever had.  First one i bought was for the Raptor 700 2009.  It sat behind my house after I crashed it. For a couple of years. Then sat in storage for 3 years. While I was building the house. Started right up. Plus I have riden on the ice -20f. Never had any problems. It's still going strong.

Thanks Pat!  What is the difference between the two VRs?  It looks like the Bosch is adjustable and the RaceTech is a really clean installation. Is that right and any other differences?

There is also the updated replacement VR   http://rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Electrical%3ARegulator (http://rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Electrical%3ARegulator)

I agree there are advantages to getting the VR out of the alternator, but I've been happy with this.

Thanks for the direct link. Pat had posted a YouTube link that let me find it on the RPM site but this is easier.

What voltage will the RPM regulator maintain?

In an effort to keep the FJ I-4 engine narrow as possible, Yamaha moved the generator from the (traditional) left side crank to behind the cylinder block. Marketing claims that the new FJ 1100cc I-4 was now no wider than a 750.
It worked...almost. The generator's stator, field windings, bearings and brushes tolerate this new location, except the VR. In my opinion, this location subject to the engine heat and vibration is the cause of our VR failures.
VR = Internal vs. External?
I think moving the VR away from this severe environment to a cooler, calmer location is key.
I favor the external adjustable Transpo IB301A VR Mod. The VR comes set at 14.4 so I have never had to change the settings, but it's nice to know I can if I wish.
