Hello all, I have a 1992 Yamaha FJ1200 and I am wondering what the stock sizes of the drive/driven sprockets are for this year? (front/rear)
The sprocket sizes may be different in Great Britain, Europe and Australia. For the U.S. spec. 1992 FJ1200, the OEM sprocket sizes are.
17 tooth front
40 tooth rear
Fred
In Australia the 3xw model came with 17/39. Don't be worried about going bigger or smaller than standard sizes, the engine has more than enough grunt to handle it. I run 18/38 for better cruising revs in top gear but still have great acceleration.
Bones has it right. The two most common gear combos we sell are 18/38 and 18/39.
My 89 came with 17/40 as stock, which I changed to 18/38 after a very short time.
I changed my 86 sprockets to 18/38 when I changed the chain the first time and loved that it got rid of the "always looking for 6th gear" feeling. As soon. As I got my new FJ in 89, my first change to the bike was to switch again to the 18/38 sprockets :good2:
Thank you guys all for the quick replies!
Randy I ordered a 17T OEM sprocket from you do you know when it will be shipped out?
I replaced my chain and sprockets last fall and kept what I had on there, 17/40. This thread has me thinking I may change that up at some point. What rpm does everyone cruise at? When the speedo shows 65 (60 or so actual) I'm at 4k rpm.

If it was a stocked part that you ordered over the weekend it ships out Monday in my experience.

With 18/38 sprockets, 60mph on my Garmin GPS Speedo (62-63 on the bike speedo), comes up at about 3,300 rpm.
Highway (Motorway) cruising is usually around 80mph Garmin (83-84mph FJ speedo) and it runs at about 4,400 rpm.
I'm running a 17" back wheel with a 170/60x17 tyre, so I'd guess a stock FJ 12 on 18/38 would be running very slightly lower rpm's at those speeds (by around 50-100 rpm's) than my bike as my back wheel circumference/diameter is slightly less than Stock.
180/55-17 with 18/39 running @ 4K rpm = 80 mph Speedo indicated

I wonder about the accuracy of the speedo on your bike Pat, with the change from a 16" wheel and different tyre width/aspect ratio - have you checked it out against a GPS speedo - it would be interesting to know if it made a difference?
I wondered similarly what effect running the front tyre on the slightly wider FZR front wheel would have on my FJ, but I really can't see any difference. My FJ speedo has actually shocked me by being more accurate that I expected it to be. My brother's GSXR 750 and a riding buddies CBR 1000 Fireblade both have speedo's that over-read much more than my FJ.
My 2001 FZ1 speedo over-reads vs my GPS by 7 mph at 150 GPS mph, but the 2003 FZS 600 speedo over-reads by 8mph at 100 GPS mph. Doesn't seem to be any pattern. My 2003 Aprilia RSV Mille speedo read only 2 mph over at 166 GPS mph.
Can you tell that I'm bored ? :sarcastic: :sarcastic:
My speedo must be pretty accurate because 100kph/62mph has the tacho sitting dead on 3500rpm. Had a 170/60/17 tyre fitted previously now a 180/55/17 and didn't really notice any difference in the revs.

Hey Deano, I have not checked my FJ Speedo with a proper GPS unit. I prolly should do that... I would trust the gearing tables and the accuracy of my tach. before I would trust my FJ speedo readings....
Alas, I can't access the gearing table at this time (iPhone) can you check for me? I'm going by my memory, so I could be off...
180/55 with 18/39 gearing, 4,000 rpm should be = or close to 80mph? It should be close...
180/55r17 at 4k with 18/39 shows 70mph.
Ok, thanks Robert....I'll trust the tables and my tach before I'll trust my Speedo....
I'll check it again next time I'm out...

I'm with Robert on the numbers Pat, 4000rpm on your set-up should = about 70mph.
I was pleasantly surprised at the accuracy of my FJ speedo - I thought it would be further out than it actually is, especially after being at the Nurburgring many years back and riding flat out alongside a GSXR 1000 (on my Aprilia RSV) where my bike was reading 168mph but the GSXR was reading 180mph - but once I put my Garmin on the FJ, I was pleasantly surprised at how close the numbers were.
Yes, I'll confirm next outing....a 3mph Speedo discrepancy is possible but a 10mph error would be too much....
Then again, I could very well be remembering my 6 speed 10AE Miata .....4K rpm @ 80mph.
