Title: FJ belt drive conversion?
Post by: Pat Conlon on April 21, 2022, 09:58:13 AM
There is a company in Brazil called M3moto that specializes in motorcycle belt drive conversions.
They are currently working on a FJ conversion.

I have posted a few questions on this modification, I have yet to hear a response from Luis at M3moto

1) Can the sprocket cover fit over the wider belt sprocket? You need this cover so you can mount the clutch slave cylinder.
2) You will need a spring loaded belt tensioner pulley mounted to the lower edge of the swing arm so you can keep the proper belt tension as the swing arm moves up and down.
3) What is the tooth count and diameter of the countershaft belt sprocket and tire sprocket?
4) The belt is wider than the stock 530 chain, so if you offset the back tire to fit the belt, will the center line of the back tire now be offset (to the right) from the center line of the front?

I like the idea of a clean, light, belt drive on my FJ...if it can made to work...the devil's in the details.
The latest generation X9 Gates carbon fiber belts (not shown in the above photos) are now stronger, narrower (same width as a 530 chain)  and can have a tighter sprocket wrap than the previous generation belts.

Love to hear your thoughts

Cheers

First time I whacked the throttle on my chopper it snapped the 1 1/4" belt like a rubber band. And shot it 100 feet behind me. But didn't do any damage. Now I just roll on the throttle. It still spins up the 250 tire. :pardon:

Dan, didn't you have the big S&S engine on your chopper? What kind of torque #'s were you seeing, 120+ft.lbs?

Lol!  My first thought was "at least it shouldn't break the cases when it breaks!"

Ultima elbruto. Basically a Merch motor. 120hp/120ftlbs. My dyno on the 1350r was 167hp/117ftlbs.

I would have expected like a 4" belt or something like a top fuel blower belt!
