Title: 2022 Pikes Peak Run
Post by: aviationfred on February 12, 2022, 07:47:09 PM
A just for fun event.... A 'Been There... Done That' sort of thing.  :music: :mail1: :drinks:

19-21 August 2022 Colorado Springs, Colorado.

I will be arriving in Colorado Springs on Friday afternoon the 19th. The Hotel/Motel has yet to be determined.

Saturday the 20th....The plan is to meet with a few other FJ owners and maybe a couple of other Non-FJ owners and Ride up to the Summit of Pikes Peak after an early lunch at Rudy's BBQ https://rudysbbq.com/location/detail/colorado-springs-co

Once back down from the summit a relaxing evening spending time with fellow FJ owners.

Sunday, the 21st is departure day and head back to Fly-Over-Country.

Hey Fred. I already talked to my sister. About that weekend.  She lives in Golden. I will be there probably alot longer. My girlfriend wants to come too. So will have to see what she can get for vacation. She likes to ride with me on the 89. So if she comes along on the Pikes Peak run. I will be wallowing at the back. You guys might have a long wait at the top and bottom. Lol.
But unless something major happens I'll be there.  :yahoo:

I'm sure I can find some time this summer to come down and give you some help if you need it. :good:

As far as Rudy's goes..........I absolutely love their BBQ!
I am going to mention one thing about them however.
If you're a "Ribs" connoisseur ( I am!) don't expect to go there and get fantastic Ribs.
I've ordered them there on two different occasions, and have been disappointed both times..........I won't order them there again.  :negative:
I don't know what it is about the way they prepare them, but they don't do them right. They taste (and chew) like Ham to me............not like Ribs should.

You've been warned!

The rest of their Menu is Killer!
The "Moist Brisket" is where it's at.............I'll ride all day long to get some of that!
Add a Jalapeno Sausage Link and a cup of Green-Chili Stew and I'm in heaven!  :nyam2:

See you all there!  :drinks:

I am looking at another bike purchase..... stepping into the Fuel injection realm. Plus the added technology of a Vtec V4 engine. If all goes as planned, I will be picking this up the 1st weekend of March.
This may be in consideration to do the Pikes Peak run due to the elevation that we will be riding at and the VFR800 has fuel injection.

I knew it would happen.................just didn't think it would be Brownie Thunder, actually thought it might be Minnie that was getting the boot  :sarcastic:

But then again, with the best bit's taken off Thunder and put onto Casper, maybe it was a bit more obvious than I thought !

I am not actively posting anywhere about the sale of Brownie Thunder. I did post on Facebook as more of a feeler gauge to see if there would be any interest.

I don't HAVE to sell it.
As someone said to me recently....

I have become more of a collector and you are more of a rider.... With Brownie Thunder being the bike it is, do not sell it. Park it, maintain it and turn it into a Collection bike.

It may end up as a once a month type of bike.

Just some FYI about riding/driving to the top of Pikes Peak.

For the August dates, admission through the Gate to get up the mountain is $15 per adult.

In addition to that, they are implementing a "Timed Reservation" system starting May 27th of this year, in order to be able to drive your own vehicle to the summit.
You have to make the reservation in advance, and it costs an additional $2 per car or motorcycle.

https://coloradosprings.gov/drivepikespeak (https://coloradosprings.gov/drivepikespeak)

I will try to call their offices and ask what to do if we have a group of motorcyclists of a known number, that all want to ride up the mountain together?
I'll post up any additional info that they tell me.

I guess they have to pay for the New Summit Visitor Center/Gift shop.

Thank you for posting with the new fees.

I still plan on doing this.

If I understand, we will each need an Adult One a day Admission AND a Timed Entry Permit?

Does anyone want to set a time?  If so, I'll go ahead and reserve several Timed Entry Permits so we can go up as a group.

The list so far looks like:
Fred (aviationfred)
Alan (Firehawk068)
Dan (giantkiller)
?Eric (gixxerfixxer)
?Todd (Toddr44)
Chris (fj1289)

?Eric and ?Todd - not sure if those are the names you use, but seemed logical from you profiles - let me know and I'll change the names if need be.

??? Anyone else interested???  FJLee comes to mind!

:sarcastic: Welp, looks like I'll have to set a reminder on my calendar to do this on July 1st - seems the open up time slot the month prior  :unknown:

In absence of any other ideas or guidance, I'll pull ten slots stating at 10:00 AM?  Any thoughts on time - is earlier better for weather?  Especially for afternoons up on top of the "weather maker"?  Maybe go for 9:00 AM?

Looks like you are limited to securing passes for 5 vehicles - maybe I'll do it twice then!

Yes you are correct.
ONE timed entry permit per Bike. ONE admission fee per Person at the gate.
Anyone carrying a passenger will have to pay a second admission fee for the passenger.

I think 10:00 am would be a good time to shoot for.
Will give everyone time to meet-up and gather the group together before heading up to the gate.
If you ride/drive sedately, it takes anywhere from 45-60 minutes to get to the summit from the gate (depending on traffic, and how many stops you might make)
If you ride like a Banshee, you could probably do it around 30.

I can make a plan to log on and get timed permits also.
Chris, if you want we can work together on this and split it up, and each get half of them?

I think we should plan on getting lunch together as a group after we come back down the Mountain.
Everyone should probably eat something before we meet up in the morning, and definitely hydrate yourself plenty before heading up.

I'll be coming from Denver that morning, so roughly a two-hour ride for me to where we meet up.
Sounds like Dan might be as well? We could most likely ride down together.

OH, and yes to answer your question about the weather..............
The storms definitely move in over the Mountain in the afternoon, sometimes early-afternoon.  Snow and hail is not uncommon up high even in the middle of summer, so be prepared!

I am seriously considering going to the Hillclimb event again this year, so I'll be up there at the end of June.
It's the 100th running of the race, and there are a few notable entries that have "Peaked" my interest.

Rod Millen is returning with his "Tacoma" to run up the Mountain.

https://youtu.be/POxmk7ttzW8 (https://youtu.be/POxmk7ttzW8)

But the one entry that really has my interest is Ken Block, with the "Hoonipigasus"

I'll be there with my wife Kris. Me on my '89 FJ1250, her on her KTM 390 Duke. We have a camp site just West of Colorado Springs in the mountains reserved already.

I've mentioned the ride to a couple of friends who live North of Denver but haven't gotten firm commitment to do the ride from them yet. Are the time slots getting booked up this early?

No - times.it's are not getting booked up yet - can't book them yet!

Alan - sounds good with splitting the group buy for the Timed Entry Permits.

I'm now a maybe for this one myself - might be out of country for work ... again.  Then again, if the timeframe keeps slipping it might be AFTER Pikes Peak!

George,

Camping sounds like a good time. Could you list the camp site that you are booked into? I would like to get a registration for Friday night and Saturday night.

I have just booked my room at the
Days Inn by Wyndham Colorado Springs/Garden of the Gods

I will be arriving mid afternoon or early evening on the 19th.

I was thinking of tent camping, but I couldn't find any campgrounds that allowed tents. The KOA in Fountain, CO. is $60.00 a night for a tent site. For that price, I will shell out a few more dollars and get a comfy bed, shower and a toilet.

Title: Re: 2022 Pikes Peak Run, Time-Slots available
Post by: Firehawk068 on July 01, 2022, 12:49:56 PM
OK,
Here's the update on this:

The Time-Slots for a summit reservation are now open for August 20th!
I just logged-in and made a reservation for myself for the 10:00am-12:00noon time-slot.
They will allow you to buy (5) of them at a time, BUT they make you enter a name and birthdate for each time-slot reservation you purchase, so I only booked one for myself.
I would suggest everyone who wants to go, login and make your own reservation at this link:

https://coloradosprings.gov/pikes-peak-americas-mountain/page/tickets-and-reservations (https://coloradosprings.gov/pikes-peak-americas-mountain/page/tickets-and-reservations)

As of 5 minutes ago, there were 171 slots available for the 10:00am-12:00noon slot.
I have no idea how fast they will sell-out? So I would suggest get on it as soon as possible to make sure we can all ride up together.
You will have to create an account to be able to make a reservation.

I am willing to purchase more reservations, but folks who want to go would have to list their first and last names, and their birth-date to allow me to purchase them.
Hope everyone who has shown interest can make it!

Alan

Casper is what I plan on riding if only needing one. If I end up bringing two.... the Honda will be added.

Tickets and time slot purchased!

No I just have to put a motorcycle together ......

Don't let a disassembled bike keep you from attending. I can bring a 2nd bike with me.

Fred

Thanks Fred!  I'll rely on that as my "no punk-out plan"!  But still need to get the BattleAxe back on the road!

Any progress on BattleAxe for the Pikes Peak run?

Fred - I'm committed to getting BattleAxe completed!  Got the bottom end buttoned up - that was the long pole in the tent.

Thanks!   :drinks:

Hopefully you have everything together and in running condition in the next couple of days.

On my end, Casper and the VFR800 are both ready to go.

Prepare for a wet ride this weekend! Forecast for the Colorado Springs area not looking great.

This time of the year localized showers and thunderstorms are expected daily. Mostly in the afternoons.
Here is a photo that I took while at the Mount Evans Summit last month. We rode down the mountain, over Squaw Pass into Evergreen, through Denver and into Kansas without seeing a drop the whole day.

We are down to a few days left before this Ride.

I'm going to suggest that our "Meetup" spot take place at the Gateway Booths where you pay your toll to ride up the mountain.
There are a couple parking areas on the left side of the road, just before you get to the Gateway.
There is also Vault-toilets there, and a gift-shop in that same place.

I am planning to arrive there at the Gateway at 10:00AM.............I should have a couple other riders along with me.

There is a Traffic-Light where you exit off of Hwy-24 onto the Pikes Peak Hwy.
Ride a short ways up the road - Following the signs up the hill.
You will pass the "North Pole" amusement-park on your left.
The Gateway Booths are just up the hill past that.

If this is OK with everyone, we'll make it so!
Remember to have your timed-reservation with you for 10:00AM

See everyone there!

That plan looks great too me.  :good2:

I am eagerly waiting for my departure Friday morning. All that is left is to hear from Chris on getting his FJ ready.

Fred - pack light!

Although BattleAxe will be together - I'll be a no-show now.   One of the Air Force pilots injured his back - I've got to cover his Saturday ferry flight  :ireful:   More than just a little PO'd - especially since he was being stupid!

A local Motorcycle-Rider extended an invitation to his residence in Colorado Springs for a "Cookout", to anyone who may be sticking around after our riding or if anyone is staying in CO-Springs on Saturday night.
He is a good friend of Fred.
If anyone would like to take part Saturday evening, please let Fred know or post up on here that you'd like to attend.  :drinks:

WHEN I get to visit, I'd love to meet up with Thomas and see his bikes in the flesh. This has given me the impetus to get back on with my VF restomod :good2:

Hey, has anyone else made it to Colorado Springs yet? Kris and I are in the Lone Duck Campground, off 24, just north of the Pikes Peak entrance.

What is the meet-up time at Rudy's BBQ?

Kurt and I are in Colorado Springs as we speak. Scroll up on this page. Alan has posted a meet time of 10:00am at the entry gate parking lot. With a late lunch stop at Rudy's for BBQ after we get to the bottom of the mountain

Fred, thanks for the update. I missed those posts, trying to read all of this on my phone is not as easy as my desktop with the 24" monitor, eh? See you all at 10 am Sat.

Lunch afterwards and the "cookout" in the evening sounds good too, count us in.

Pat, it was a good ride. When we got to the entryway they told us that it was closed at the 13 mile mark due to snow at the top. We rode up theought the clouds, stopping at the Crystal Reservoir visitor center for some pics.

... So after the group bike shots at the res. we continued through the clouds towards the top. The road did get fairly wet as we got further up and we did get past the 13 mile mark to the Devil's Playground pull off where rangers were stopping everyone. So we took more pics an then headed back down. After exiting the park we headed to Rudy's BBQ for lunch. Excellent moist brisket! . . .

... then Fred arranged for us to have dinner at this guy Tom's house. Tom is into early model Honda VFs kinda like our group with FJs.  :yahoo: So he and his girlfriend made us a nice dinner while he showed us some spectacular examples of Honda VF1000Fs he's "fixed up", he's got a serious case of moditus by the way. He's got several VFs including a VF400, which I don't think was ever released in the U.S. Then I saw in his garage a 1988 Hawk GT. I had one before getting my FJ. I had fixed it up from a total wreck to near new.  It was a great little bike. I reluctantly had to trade it in in order to get my FJ. Then Tom mentions he wants to sell it. We negotiated a price, with Kurt's help. So for the 2nd time this year and 3rd time in 3 years I have gone to an FJ gathering an left with an extra bike.

Very nice.  When I was looking to buy a new bike in '89, it was between the Hawk and the FJ.

Was great to be along for this event...I was the one *without* a bike, but enjoyed it all!   It gave me a chance to get some shots of the bikes and riders on a few of the corners.  Thanks to THIS guy for putting this event together...

Thanks for the update fellas. We are having an unusually wet monsoon season here in Arizona. I wondered how all the spin off moisture would affect the mountains in Colorado....snow in August eh?
I guess the rule book gets tossed at elevations above 9k
