Title: Am I missing something? Fairing piece
Post by: Dub on May 03, 2021, 03:11:56 PM
AS I am buttoning up my project, I noticed the underside of the cowl has indents for what looks to be a plastic panel. When I got the bike the windshields that I was given for it were in a bag so I didnt notice it. In the attached diagram, the highlighted area reps where the panels would be. These do not show up on most parts lists so I was wondering if they exist at all and I am missing mine or if they are just a figment of my imagination.

Thanks,

The parts diagram is for a FZ 750  do you have a FZ cowling ?

Anyway here is a link for the 89 cowling diagram : https://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-fj1200-1989-k-usa_model9471/partslist/G-12.html (https://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-fj1200-1989-k-usa_model9471/partslist/G-12.html)

Realize the image isnt an FJ cowling.

Doesnt change the question however. Do these exist or not?

These are on the growing list of Unobtanium.

Yeah, I can see that. Looks like I am going to have to design and print or cast some of my own variety for the time being. Maybe I will make one with a ram ball mount integrated towards the base at the lower mounting hole.

For some reason I'm missing one.  It would be a good part to design and print.

For reasons unknown...... the right side pieces are often on eBay..... But the left ones are nearly impossible to find.

Yes they are hard to find as soon as I saw Pete had 2 for sale I jumped on them thanks Pete.  Even though I had already found a  pair for my 89. Seems like I might have gotten them from Fred. Or else you posted when they came up. It's been a while. Pat's new 89 is missing both. I saved a picture of the bike. From when it was still at the seller's  just so he doesn't think I pirated them. Lol.

There is a guy on the Fake Book FJ page that is in the process of producing Carbon Fibre replacement parts for the infill panels of the fairings. He has done some 1TX panels so far. We can only hope that these parts are on his list of things to do. He is working on the dash/gauge surround at the moment.

Thanks for the heads up Urban. If you see progress on his part, please share. However, not sure I want to wait till someone gets around to it. I have a need now so I might be a bit more inclined to act sooner rather than later or fabricate a support piece to secure the windshield to.

I dont have a set to make molds from so I will need to measure and create in Fusion360. Then I can print either a part or a mold for a part. That might be an opportunity to try the carbon fiber filament.

I have some flexible material so I am doing the rubber fuse holder block first.
